Between all our gaming sessions, I found myself wondering if there was another hobby that could capture the same sense of adventure. Something that would be just as fun for me and Junior, while offering the same opportunities to learn, imagine, and grow. Only this time... away from the monitor.

So... I decided to give Dungeons & Dragons a shot. Or... perhaps, more appropriately... a one-shot. 🙃

Now, here’s the interesting part: I’ve never been a Dungeon Master before. I’d only ever play as part of a group of friends, and it was always a time to remember. But as a dad, I am also seeing this tabletop game as a storytelling tool. A chance for us to create a story together.

So yeah... why not go on an adventure with Junior?

The Setup

Preparing our first adventure turned out to be surprisingly simple.

A copy of the basic rules. Two sets of dice. A simple grid map and washable markers. A handful of figurines… and, according to Junior, one very important addition:

“Why can’t I play with my LEGO minifigure?”
Well… honestly... why not? 😄

So, alongside a few fantasy miniatures, his slime-headed LEGO hero officially joined the party.

I also, did not set our first adventure in any particular world. No official campaign books, no pre-written adventures, and “most importantly” no careful balanced encounters. Instead, I went with what felt most natural: a few rough guidelines for me and the classic "adventurers arrive at a tavern" beginning.

“What’s a tavern?“ Haha, then I realized… this usually may be considered a trope, but for Junior, it would be a first.

For quests, I borrowed inspiration from favorite games and movies. And I also wanted our story to end with a proper dungeon crawl. So I opened a simple free map-making tool, printed a dungeon layout, and sprinkled in a few traps here, a puzzle there, some monsters around and an event at the end.

Then came the heroes.

Junior created Slimy, a Water Genasi Fighter inspired by his beloved slime-headed LEGO minifigure. Meanwhile, besides acting as Dungeon Master, I also rolled up a character of my own: Log, a Firbolg Monk. He wasn't meant to steal the spotlight—quite the opposite. His role was to be a guiding or helpful hand when needed, and for me, to experience this adventure alongside Junior.

With all this, we were genuinely excited to discover where the story might take us. We were ready for a literal unexpected adventure!

First Taste of an Adventure (Session 1)

For the next few hours, we weren't father and son anymore. We were simply two travelers trying to make a living on the road.

We reached a small town and, weary from a day’s travel, entered the only tavern we could find, where the townsfolk were eager to welcome a pair of new faces.

Asking if there was any work for us in exchange for a day's coin, we learned that the innkeeper had lost a few chickens over the past several days. Then, a local named Tom told us that a few children had also gone missing almost a week earlier, and the whole town was growing worried, as every search party had come back empty-handed.

Naturally, we wanted to tackle the missing children first. It felt far more important than a few stolen chickens. But... well... Junior quickly discovered how a few unlucky rolls can leave you with very little information on where to begin.

“But I rolled high!“ Junior protested, not understanding our bad luck.
”You rolled a 9.” I tried to explain.
”Yeah… that’s almost the highest grade at school!”
…Oh. Now I understood the confusion, so I explained the D20 die again. 🙂

The next day… we started at the chicken coop, where Junior rolled a Perception check, now hoping for numbers above 10.
The dice bounced and rolled. It stopped, and… His first Nat20!
“Yeah! The highest grade!”
Well… he was still thinking in school grades, but the cheer was spot on.

That keen eye he rolled revealed a very, very faint trail of footprints. And his conclusion came immediately.
”Someone is stealing chickens!” Junior declared, proud of himself for solving the mystery.

So off we went, following the trail deep into the forest…
“A pair of bandits?! For sure, hiding in the forest.“ Junior thought.
The tracks eventually led us to the entrance of a cave. Its mouth wide open and uninviting, as if ready to swallow us whole.
Junior looked at me: “Should we really go in? There are bandits in there.” he said, now unsure of himself.

But we entered. Lit a torch, and carefully explored a fairly deep cave but…
No sings of life…?
No bandits, no chickens… ?
Just damp stones, dripping water, and… silence.
“What is this? Where are the bandits? Can’t we even find a few chickens?!“ He was genuinely disappointed! At least… until…

Until he caught the faintest smell in the air. On the final perception check, a smell of… Crispy Chicken?! 😮 What in the world?

Following the smell, he noticed a narrow, hidden passage branching off from the main cave. So…

We extinguished the torch.
He readied his sword.
I clenched my fists and… together, we slipped into the darkness. Surely the bandits were enjoying a freshly cooked chicken on the other side.

We managed to reach the other side without a sound. Then… a flickering light. A campfire. And, as we carefully peeked into the chamber beyond...

Kids? Kids?!… The kids!
Two teenagers... and a smaller one.

After giving them quite a scare, we eventually found ourselves sitting around the fire, listening to the story behind their little summer adventure. It had all been the older boy's idea, and he had just went to fetch fresh water, so he should arrive shortly… and arrive he did.

In a hurry.
Shouting, screaming.
Yelling to the other kids to get into the narrow tunnel!

A pack of wolves was right behind him, closing the distance fast. Luckily, we were there. We jumped in between, ready to take on three angry wolves.

It turned into a short but exciting fight. We took a few bites, but the wolves couldn't stand against a fighter's sword for long, and soon they started running the other way.

We didn’t linger any longer in the cave, we gathered all that we could—including the few uneaten chickens—and began the journey back to town.
With the children safe, the mystery solved, and the missing chickens finally accounted for, I found myself looking forward to collecting our reward.

But Slimy?… He wasn't thinking about the reward at all. He was fully immersed, fully in character. In his mind, he was truly traveling beside the kids, proudly taking on the role of the more experienced adventurer, sharing a few lessons from the road.
“See? Adventures are better when you come back home afterward.”
Then, after a thoughtful pause, he added:
“And... never steal chickens again.”

The Unintended Quest (Session 2)

After celebrating with the townsfolk late into the evening, we packed our belongings the following morning, ready to continue our journey… or so we thought.

The town mayor had a small favor to ask of us: to check on the town’s hunter, stationed at a cabin high in the nearby mountains. He usually returned once a week with the spoils of his hunts, but this time he was running late. We agreed!

Upon reaching the cabin, we found it… empty.
No hunter, nor any sign of where he could be. Well… we guessed he was out hunting, right? So we tried our chicken coop trick again, searching for tracks.

After a few rolls and several different attempts, we managed to find what looked like a possible trail. We weren't completely sure we were following the right direction, but eventually… something caught our attention.

Sounds up ahead.
A low growl echoed between the trees.
We quietly crept closer. Then came another growl, followed by an unmistakable sound of flesh being torn apart.

”What could it possible be?” Well… while hiding behind a line of trees, we spotted a large bear happily filling its belly with a fresh kill.
“Let’s not disturb him!“ Junior whispered.

That plan didn't last long. As from behind another group of trees, two bolts suddenly flew through the air, striking the bear in its side. But they only seemed to anger it. Roaring in fury, it charged toward whoever had fired them.

“The Hunter!“ Junior called out, surprised. “He is trying to hunt a bear by himself?!”
Without thinking twice, we jumped to help.
I managed to land the first blow, drawing the bear's attention just as it was about to maul the hunter. Well… lucky for him, as the bite now came for me. Junior rushed in to flank the beast, but he wasn't quite in time, and...

“Did the bear just rolled a 20?!“ he asked, suddenly unsure of what was about to happen.
”Uhmm… Yeah! And I’ll be taking double the damage.” and with that perfect critical hit, I was down after a single bite.
I fell unconscious.

Junior visibly shocked… He looked at me, then at the bear, then back at me.
”Go on! Bring that bear down! See if you can save me!” I encouraged him. And so, with renewed determination, he threw himself back into the fight, now both excited and terrified at each roll of the dice. Thankfully, the hunter's bolts were now flying beside him as well.

The bear proved very tough. It bit me. It bit Slimy. After absorbing blow after blow, and bolt after bolt, it was preparing one final attack against Slimy too...
But he missed.

That was its downfall… one more bolt and one final thrust from Slimy’s sword, and we now had the promise of a proper bear steak.

Before anything else, the hunter patched me up with a few medicinal herbs, just enough to get us to his cabin, where we spent the evening enjoying a well-earned bear steak.

Over dinner, we learned what had happened: it seemed the bear had grown clever enough to follow the hunter and steal his kills, that’s why he hadn’t returned to town for so long. But now?… Now he had a WHOLE bear. 😄

The following morning, he packed several large bags full of meat, ready to head back to town. We gladly helped him carry the load, while Junior even suggested that, for future trips like this...

“...you should really buy a donkey.” Not bad advice, honestly.

Back in town, the mayor was impressed once again. No reward had been promised, as we had only been asked to check on the hunter, but after hearing what had happened and seeing our adventurous spirit, he had in idea.
He decided to hand us an old map. No promises of treasure. Just the location of an old ruin and he wasn’t even sure we’d find anything there.

Junior was already ready to end the session, satisfied with everything we’d accomplished. But then...

I reached behind my back… “One more thing.“ I said.
And I handed him a rolled-up piece of parchment.

Junior froze…
”...Is that... The Map?” His eyes popping out as he carefully unrolled it, to discover an old, worn, slightly burned parchment that looked like it had survived countless adventures of its own. “Yohoo… A REAL Map!“

Yeah! I actually created a realistic looking treasure map just for him, a physical handout. A small piece of our adventure that had spilled into our real world. 😄

We packed everything away for the evening. But Junior… he was still holding onto the map. Still studying it. Wondering about the landmarks, the strange symbols, the mysterious X spot, how we would get there... and what we might find.

At that moment, I was happy. I think I managed to make him no longer excited for the next session… but for us to resume our adventure. 🙂

A Proper Hiking Journey (Session 3)

That little parchment completely changed our adventure. We were no longer taking jobs from worried villagers or helping stranded hunters.

Now... We had a destination.
A mystery.
An X marked on an old map.

After studying it together and figuring out our location, we realized the marked spot was a literal mountain away. So… we excitedly prepared for a hiking trip, eager to find out whether there was any truth behind the map and if there was a hidden discovery waiting for us.

Before leaving, we prepared exactly like we do for our real mountain hikes. Rations. A tent. Warm blankets. Rope. Pitons. Medicine. A few useful tools. Even a Level Up. And, just like in real life... I may have overpacked a little. 😅 Then again, my Firbolg belongs to a half-giant race, so he can carry twice as much as a normal human.

“Yeeey! We’re going hiking and camping with a tent in the mountains here too!“ Junior stated excitedly.

Now… behind the screen, I rolled for weather, random encounters, and the difficulty of the trail… which looked like it would take us about 4 days. We got soaked by a rain a few times, but the weather remained warm and sunny overall, so thankfully no exhaustion checks were needed. And what I enjoyed the most here, was simply describing the journey. Towering mountain peaks in the distance, winding forest trails, rivers cutting through rocky valleys, how we'd stop just to admire the view before continuing onward.

The only memorable encounter, however, came when we reached a wide river, swollen by the recent rains.

“How do we cross?” Junior wondered aloud.

We looked upstream. Downstream.
No bridge. No fallen tree. No shallow crossing.

“Oh, I know!” Junior said suddenly, looking at his character sheet. “I can freeze water!“

Indeed, Slimy had a trick up his sleeve. As a Water Genasi, he could cast Shape Water, a simple cantrip spell that allowed him to temporarily freeze a few patches of water. You bet I was a proud Gamer Dad, because Junior had come up with a solution entirely on his own.

So… slowly and very carefully, we started crossing the river on patches of ice, suspended above the rushing current, using his Water Genasi magic. But... it seemed there was a hungry crocodile nearby, and it was itching to make a meal out of us.

Completely focused on keeping our balance, we never saw it coming. The crocodile got the jump on us. Slimy managed to leap safely to the opposite bank, but I was stranded on a patch of ice. He even tried freezing the crocodile's tail in the water while I attempted another jump after taking a nasty bite from the beast.

But in the end, though, we brought it down, and we set up camp on the riverbank to patch up my wound, lit a campfire, and enjoyed some roasted crocodile skewers.

“Skewered meat over the fire is awesome... just like marshmallows when we camp for real.“ Junior remarked.

The following day, we finally reached the X. There were no glittering treasures. No piles of gold to be dug up. Just the weathered ruins of an old church. But somehow...

Hidden beneath a big rock… A cellar door!

“My first dungeon!”

The Final Dungeon Trial (Session 4)

As we stepped inside, the atmosphere changed immediately.
No more warm sun or fresh air. No more soft grass beneath our feet.
Everything was damp, dark and… silent.

Like the dungeon itself was waiting for us to make the first move.
To make the first sound.

And indeed, Junior noticed it immediately and became much more attentive.
More careful of his surroundings.
And he was right to be, as… in the very first room, we barely brushed against a few spider webs before several swarms of spiders came crawling toward us. In the first corridor... spiked traps. In the first side chamber... a skeleton.
Surely, all omens of danger.

“We should really check everything...” Junior noted.

Then, step by careful step… avoiding another trap and not touching another spider web, we reached a large stone chamber.

Five ancient altars stood in a circle.
Each one carried strange carved symbols.
Not letters, or drawings.
Just flowing, wavy or sharp lines.

They made no sense... until Junior suddenly grabbed the old map.
“...Wait... I’ve seen these before.”

They were indeed marked on the map, scattered in seemingly random places. He realized each symbol represented an element, and placing the correct one upon its matching altar was what we needed to do. Each solved altar awakened the ancient mechanism hidden beneath the temple.

Somewhere ahead, heavy stone echoed through the corridors... and moments later, something else awakened.
To our dismay, every activation also released another guardian: a giant spider, a stone golem, a pair of enormous snakes, a massive centipede, and finally... a Basilisk.

The encounters grew tougher and tougher, and only during the final battle did Slimy finally fall unconscious, but fortunately I managed to finish the fight. Each guardian had emerged from the passage ahead, and only after defeating all five guardians did the final passage reveal itself.

Finally, we could continue. After a short rest to gather ourselves, we pressed onward, only to discover... a vast underground lake? And no bridge.

Looking more carefully, we realized the water stretched far beyond the reach of our torches, and was about a meter below the rocky ledge where we stood. And in the middle of the lake stood another platform.

A small shrine.
A stone table.
And, of course... a treasure chest.
All taunting us to come. Swimming? Well... we only needed one glance to realize the lake was full of hungry sharks… Looking for clues, we discovered a stone tablet hidden beneath another old spider web.
It carried only a single sentence: Only the faithful shall walk onward.

“What does that mean?…” We searched everywhere.
No hidden lever. No secret door. No bridge.

Nothing…!

Even Log wasn't sure… He kept staring at the inscription, thinking out loud:
”Faithful shall walk… hmm… I'm not sure blindly trusting something lets you walk on water...”
Then... Junior looked up. “Wait! What if... There IS a bridge!”

Silence.

“Only one way to find out!” Junior said closing his eyes and... stepping forward.

...

He didn’t fall.

The bridge had been there all along. Invisible. Junior couldn't stop smiling as he confidently began walking across what looked like thin air… but!

That would be far too easy, right? He then realized The sharks weren’t simply hungry. They were guarding the crossing. Every few moments one would leap from the water, over the bridge, trying to bite us, or knock us into the lake below.

The challenge suddenly became clear. Each round we needed to keep running across the invisible bridge while sharks attacked. We could spend precious time fighting... or gamble everything and run.
We tried fighting once, but quickly abandoned the idea after realizing just one bite had taken a third of Log's health. So we committed:

Slimy used Action Surge.
Log used Step of the Wind.
Together we sprinted toward the treasure, reaching it in only two more rounds.
But we were completely spent.

Inside the chest we found exactly what every adventurer hopes for: gold, jewels, equipment that fit each of our characters surprisingly well, and even a handful of healing potions. They would prove invaluable on the journey back.

This time we tried dodging the sharks, but without success…
One bite tore through our defenses.
Then another bite.
And Another.

Until... Slimy collapsed.
I quickly poured a healing potion down his throat, bringing him back to his feet... only for me to fall in that exact same moment.
Junior getting up. Me going down.

“Oh, NOOO!“ Junior exclaimed.

And with only a final dash left to reach the cave ledge... Junior froze.
…
But only for a second.
He then quickly hoisted Log onto his shoulders.

Somehow… dodging the incoming shark attack.
Somehow… carrying both of us safely back onto solid ground.

Now THAT… was a Hero move!

We were finally safe. Junior gave me his last healing potion, and we rested there for quite some time, barely able to move.
We recovered. We climbed out of the ruins, set up camp beneath the open sky, and… for that evening at least, we stepped out of the adventure and packed away the dice.

Junior couldn’t stop talking about everything that had happened:

The traps. The puzzles. The invisible bridge. The sharks.
He had defeated monsters... solved riddles... saved his friend... and completed his very first dungeon.

And while he was reliving every moment of the adventure... I found myself thinking about something else entirely.

A Dungeon Father Thoughts

Looking back, I honestly think this became one of the most memorable gaming experiences Junior and I have shared. And yes... I still call it gaming.

Dungeons & Dragons may happen around a table instead of a monitor, and it may begin as a board game, but for me it is far more of a storytelling game, one that is present much more in our imagination than on the table itself.

I never wrote a complete adventure. I only prepared a handful of ideas, borrowed inspiration from some of my favorite games and movies, then trusted the dice—and Junior—to take the story somewhere neither of us expected. Did you recognize any elements?

• The 1^st session's quest was inspired by The Witcher 3's Empty Coop side quest, which fit perfectly as a first taste of D&D: simple, mysterious, funny in the end, and with just enough danger to become the perfect introduction for Junior.

• Skyrim was an inspiration for the village, which I’ve imagined similar with Riverwood. And, of course, Skyrim also inspired the hiking journey from the 3^rd session.

• Do you remember the elemental stones from The Fifth Element? Well... they became the inspiration for the dungeon's first puzzle room. 😎

• And if you haven't figured it out yet, the invisible bridge from the final stage of the dungeon was borrowed straight from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. 🤠

But those inspirations were only starting points and guidelines. I never planned every step. I didn't know exactly how all those ideas would connect or how I would weave together all the different elements… but through improvisation, collaboration, a few lucky dice rolls—and quite a few unlucky ones—the adventure slowly wrote itself.

It became something neither of us could have planned beforehand, and that’s what fascinates me about D&D. It exercises the muscle of imagination in a way I’ve never experienced with any other game.

Watching Junior grow over just four sessions was fascinating. At first, he waited for me to initiate most of the decisions and conversations. But I’d gently encourage him to choose, to ask questions, and speak with the villagers himself.

By the end, Slimy wasn’t following Log anymore... he was saving him. And sure, every now and then he still rushed headfirst into a spider nest, but he also began proposing clever solutions, talking to NPCs on his own, and treating the world as if it truly existed.

The only place where he still looks to me is during combat. He enjoys the action but prefers that I narrate the dramatic sword swings, daring leaps, and heroic moments. And that's alright. Imagination is a muscle too, and I suspect every new adventure will strengthen it a little more.

More importantly, D&D constantly placed him in situations that no parent can easily recreate in everyday life: negotiating with strangers, solving problems under pressure, making decisions with incomplete information, accepting failure when the dice refuse to cooperate, and learning that sometimes bravery means asking for help instead of charging ahead.

None of it was real... Yet, all of the thinking was. All teaching him how to approach unfamiliar situations a little better. Today, inside a game of imagination. Tomorrow... perhaps in real life too.

Yes, it takes time. Preparing the sessions took an evening here and there, and each adventure lasted around three hours. Even my wifey would occasionally check in on us. 😅

But not once did those hours feel wasted. They became stories we’ll remember years from now. Stories we built together. Stories that helped us grow. Stories that only existed because we chose to sit around a table with a handful of dice, a few figurines and our imaginations. That’s a pretty remarkable thing for any game to achieve. What more could a Gamer Dad ask from a game?

Dreams that have always fascinated me because, as a kid, I had them constantly. And what’s interesting is that some of my most memorable ones seem to have a surprising connection to gaming.

It’s not something I talk about often. In fact, dreams are probably one of the more personal subjects I’ve ever decided to write about. Yet the connection I discovered between gaming and dreaming was simply too fascinating to ignore.

So here we go.

But before I dive into my own experiences—and those shared by several fellow gamers—I want to make the case that this isn’t just a strange Gamer Dad Theory. There is actual psychological research exploring the relationship between gaming, imagination, dreaming and even lucid dreaming.

Why Gamers Dream… Differently

One of the leading researchers in this area is psychologist Jayne Gackenbach, who spent years studying the relationship between video games, dreams, and consciousness. What she discovered was fascinating.

Gackenbach and her colleagues, since 2006, analysed dozens of dream reports from experienced gamers. They found that gamers were significantly more likely to experience lucid dreams (dreams in which the dreamer becomes aware they are dreaming), and they were also more likely to actively influence and direct what happened inside those dreams.

Also, gamers appeared less disturbed by nightmares and threatening dream situations. Rather than waking up in fear, many would take control of the dream itself, changing the outcome or confronting whatever threat they faced.

Reading that immediately made me think back to my own childhood experiences... but before we get to that, the research becomes even more interesting.

A later study, published in 2012, explored the relationship between gaming, dream content, and creativity. Researchers found that gamers tended to report dreams that were more unusual, bizarre, and imaginative than those of non-gamers. More importantly, gaming history showed a positive relationship with visual and spatial creativity.

In simple terms, the people spending more time exploring virtual worlds also appeared more likely to experience unusual dream worlds and demonstrate greater creative thinking. Why?

Well… think about what gaming constantly asks us to do—to focus on objectives while distractions compete for our attention. We navigate complex three-dimensional spaces and pay attention to our surroundings. We learn systems, we experiment. We fail, adapt, and try again.

Over time, these activities strengthen our sense of agency and the feeling that “I can act upon this world!” And perhaps, that mindset may be carry over into our dreams, resulting in a better ability to recognize that something isn’t quite right. In the confidence to interact with an unfamiliar environment. In an instinct to experiment instead of panic. And the willingness to take control rather than remain a passive observer... In some ways, gaming may be training aspects of consciousness itself.

Now, it is important to mention that this research is still relatively young and mostly correlational. Not every gamer experiences lucid dreams, and individual differences seem to play a significant role. But across multiple studies, the pattern remains surprisingly consistent: gamers tend to report more lucid dreaming, more dream control and greater creativity.

And after reading these findings... I couldn’t help but look back at my own dreams through a different and more complex lens.

From Nightmares to… Flying

As a kid, I used to have nightmares fairly often. Some were so vivid that they would wake me up carrying sensations from dreams into the real world. These are called hypnopompic hallucinations—physical or sensory experiences that linger briefly after waking… like tingling, numbness, or a phantom pain.

I remember a nightmare where I was bit by a spider, only to wake up with a sharp pain exactly where the bite had happened. In another nightmare, I was woken up by a deafening crow scream… only to continue hearing it, even after turning on all the lights, the scream echoed and echoed, slowly fading like hearing it from further and further away for several minutes. Unsettling.

But as I grew, and played more games, something began to change.

I started noticing when a dream was beginning to turn into a nightmare. I couldn’t stop it, but somehow I became aware that things were heading in the wrong direction. Whenever that happened, I would wish for help… and strangely enough, help arrived.

It came in the form of a stretcher—or a hospital bed on wheels. Every single time, it would appear as a tiny dot in the distance, moving toward me like the light at the end of a tunnel would reach out to save me…. and when it would stop near my side, I would climb onto it, close my eyes, trust, and feel myself being carried through what I can only describe as a winding tunnel, until I woke up safely in my own bed.

This happened often enough that it became a habit. Eventually, I stopped fearing nightmares because I knew my rescue would arrive.

Then, over time, I started recognizing the feeling that came after closing my eyes. I learned what happened next. Until one day, when… the stretcher stopped appearing.

Yet… there was no panic. I knew the feeling. I knew what I had to do. So whenever a nightmare began getting out of control, I would simply crouch, close my eyes and follow that familiar tunnel back to waking up. I had learned how to leave.

This was my new habit, only to… realize something even stranger was happening.

I became curious.

Instead of escaping, I started staying. I would let the nightmare unfold. I would let the monster appear. I would look it at it and it would no longer seem that scary… at that point, something shifted.

I was becoming aware that I was dreaming, and with that… came control. And more than just controlling my exit.

I would fly. I would spawn cars and drive them around like I was playing Grand Theft Auto (San Andreas or Vice City). I would swing between buildings like Spider-Man (Web of Shadows anyone?). I would even start to leap from dream to dream, like straight out of Psychonauts.

Even today, I still have favorite dream locations. Most often, I find myself standing on mountain peaks overlooking vast valleys filled with forests and flowers, while the sky erupts into spectacular sunrise, bathing the clouds in a warm glow of color. Many times I’ve woken up amazed by what my own mind managed to create, wishing I had the painting skills to capture those landscapes before they fade away.

I can't help but wonder if those dreamlike mountains and endless vistas were built from the beautiful virtual worlds I explored growing up. After all, some of my favorite gaming memories were simply pausing to admire the views—a thought I explored further in:

The Night My Dream Spilled into Reality

This happened more than once, often with puzzle and adventure games like Supaplex, Broken Sword, The Longest Journey, Myst… But the most vivid example, is the first. And it came through the olden but golden classic of a game, The Lost Vikings.

I was stuck on Level 21. Level which began at a crossroads. Baleog needed to ride an elevator below. Erik could jump across a deadly gap by using blocks suspended above it. But Olaf the Stout? He only had his shield. He had no obvious path forward.

For two days, I tried everything I could think of, and… nothing worked.

Most notably, there was a button at the end of the gap Erik would jump over, but there seemed to be no way to reach it. Usually Baleog could activate distant switches with his arrows, but he was too far away. The arrow would simply despawn before reaching it…

I was completely stuck.

Then the next night, in a dream… I started the level, jumped across with Erik, switched to Baleog, fired an arrow toward the button, and then immediately switched back to Erik. The camera would then transition to Erik by traversing the whole gap, not letting the arrow reach the edge of the screen, therefore the arrow did not disappear. It crossed the gap, hit the button, and a bridge appeared… just perfect for the unathletic Olaf to traverse.

Immediately! Once I woke up, I ran to the computer, loaded the game, and tried it.

And to my complete disbelief... it worked.

Exactly as I had seen it in the dream.

The bridge appeared. The puzzle was solved. The solution my sleeping mind had imagined was actually real! And I remember sitting there completely dumbfounded.

My best guess on how such thing is possible?… Maybe gaming trained my mind to see challenges as problems to solve rather than situations to escape. But…

But enough about me.

As fascinating as these experiences were, they left me wondering how this connection between gaming and dreams was felt and… well, dreamt by other gamers.

So I reached out to fellow writers and creators, asking them to share their own stories. And let’s give a huge Thank You to them for sharing something… only they dreamt about.

Here are their stories:

Bright flickers of a fast-moving light from a massive CRT TV were cast all over my face. In the background, a soft whirring noise emitted from my Slim PlayStation 2’s disc drive that filled the noise in the air. The roar of a car engine from my simple TV speakers made me grip my controller even tighter, all while my BMW M3 GTR drifted through traffic — barely squeezing by a semitruck!

As soon as I shut down my PS2 late at night and stopped playing Need for Speed: Most Wanted, I would often dream of high-speed racing through fictional busy streets. As a kid, the thrill of speed and close calls made this game stand out to me. I dreamt of racing on the open road, flying through golf courses, and blowing through anyone or anything that stood in my way. Fortunately, my outlet to get these thrills of fantastical racing could be found in the form of this addictive game!

It didn’t matter if I was dreaming while I slept, or had a daydream while sitting in the back of my parent’s car on the highway — I couldn’t wait to get back on the streets of Rockport in Need for Speed: Most Wanted!

Some of the best games I have ever played have been those I played in my dreams. That’s not to disparage the actual real-life video games that were lovingly crafted by actual real-life people and which I thoroughly enjoyed in a realm far more concrete than my sleeping subconscious.

But then I drift off to sleep and imagine I’m playing a remake of the original God of War. Yes, this is something that has actually happened to me. And yes, I do believe these dreams eventually willed Santa Monica Studio into actually remaking the original Greek-saga trilogy. I’m assuming Sony will send through my cut of the profits after the remakes are released.

The remake I dreamt of had me revisiting some of my favorite locations in one of my favorite games—such as the opening battle against the Hydra and the cliffs around Pandora’s Temple—only now they were re-imagined in some really beautiful ways. I was so enamored with this imagined God of War remake that after waking up, it took me several minutes before the haze dispersed and I realized that none of it ever existed. At least, not yet. Cory Barlog and I have been in constant discussion ever since.

I barely dream. Or at least, I never remember what I dreamed. So when this topic landed, I sat with it for a few days before anything surfaced.

Then it hit me, my love for games and gaming in general had altered the way my brain processed dreams, especially nightmares. My mom once asked if I ever got scared in my dreams. My response was “not really; I’ve played too many scary games“ (Doom, F.E.A.R., Metro, just to name a few). And that was true. Something strange happened when I found myself in a nightmare scenario. I’d get curious. The initial shock of what was in front of me would fade fast, and suddenly I was exploring it, poking at it, trying to solve it.

I might wake up sweating, but I’d be unbothered. Like a brutal Dark Souls session, I’d be frustrated but ready to run it back. And here’s the thing: to my knowledge, I never faced the same nightmare twice. Every dungeon monster... I mean, dream... was a new level. 😂

Gaming taught me to be calm and inquisitive. That fear was just an unexplored room. That confusion was just a puzzle I hadn’t cracked yet.

Without it, I’d have just woken up shaken. Instead, I now respawn and keep going.

Same energy, different dungeon.

I remember having this crazy dream as a kid while running a fever. In it, I was being chased by the red-light, green-light crocodiles from Donkey Kong Country. Their eyes would have these huge glowing spotlights, alternating between green and red to signal when they could move and when they couldn’t.

The whole dream was essentially a bizarre survival challenge to see how long I could survive, constantly running through endless corridors, with those crocodiles hot on my heels.

Honestly, I think there’s a great idea hiding in there. I would love to see a horror game—or maybe even a VR experience—built around that exact premise.

Gaming, Growth, and the Sleeping Mind

So, as you can see... it’s not just me!

From psychological research, to my own experiences, to the stories shared by fellow gamers, there seems to be a clear connection between gaming and our dream lives. The worlds we explore, the challenges we overcome, the stories we experience, and even the skills we practice, sometimes follow us into our subconscious and become part of the strange, creative, and often wonderful landscape of our dreams.

Of course, as with most things, balance matters. Excessive gaming, especially late into the night, can negatively affect sleep quality, reduce restorative rest, and make it harder to maintain healthy sleep habits. Gaming is no exception to the rule that too much of a good thing can become a problem.

But when approached responsibly, gaming appears capable of offering something genuinely positive. Research suggests it can stimulate creativity, strengthen our ability to distinguish between fantasy and reality, encourage self-reflection and self-awareness, and even increase the likelihood of lucid dreaming. For me personally, lucid dreaming became a powerful tool during childhood and my teenage years, helping me confront nightmares and sleep more peacefully.

And perhaps that’s what fascinates me most.

Gaming started as entertainment, but developed in a true tool of influence in my life, for the better. And now? We know now that gaming can follow us into our dreams, into our subconscious, where our minds continue exploring, experimenting, imagining, and learning in ways we barely understand.

So, let’s keep on gaming and growing... And of course, keep on dreaming. 😉

At that time, I honestly had no idea where this would lead. I just knew I wanted to create, to write simple reviews with a more personal touch and to share the experiences I was having with Junior, hopefully to impart some lessons, memories, and the value we can find in our played games.

And now… one year later… I find myself looking back at something much bigger than I expected. But first, let me just say:

Thank you!.. Thank you to everyone who read an article, listened to a narration, shared a post, left a comment, recommended or mentioned my Substack, or just simply stayed around to see what this strange Gamer Dad was building over on his internet corner.

It means so much more than you know. Thank you a lot!

From Simple Reviews to… Something More

Looking back through my articles, notes, and stats, what surprised me most was how much my creative process evolved through this year.

In total, I published 33 articles:

• 15 Gamer Dad Reviews

• 9 Dad’s Solo articles (6 Reviews, 2 Stories, and 1 Interview)

• 2 let’s say, growth oriented articles

• 7 Subsnacks (3 Game Lists, 2 Media Reviews, and 2 Other)

• 5 collaborations with fellow creators: Thank you , , and for having me.

Over time… I found that my articles started to grow, might you say, to grow alongside me. 🙂

Junior became more involved in the Gamer Dad Reviews. As the small added reactions slowly turned into full dialogue moments that Junior narrates alongside me. And he is looking forward to more, maybe to even write his own review. Be sure I’m a proud Gamer Dad!

As for narrations… At first, I only wanted to record simple audio versions of the articles. But, after Junior joined in… I started to also add sound effects, then music, easter eggs, even atmospheric moments. So… somehow, many articles slowly transformed more into… multimedia experiences. 😆 Some became full YouTube videos that honestly… I’m proud of.

The Elite Dangerous Story, remains one of my favorite examples of this, but there were many others that left me with a feeling of… a job well done, like:

• Black The Fall, because of its connection to Romanian history and the memories of the 1989 Revolution.

• Thumper, where the added soundscapes, really enhanced the review, even convincing to give it a shot, which turned into his own Thumper review.

• Brothers and Little Inferno Gamer Dad Reviews, because of the deep lessons they sparked both in me and Junior.

• The Dragon Ball article and it’s Video conversion, which turned out far better than I ever imagined.

• The Scenery and Family-themed Game Lists, because they brought together personal stories, meaningful games, narrations with music from each game, and even a contribution from . Both eventually evolving into some truly awesome Videos.

• The recent Who Are You When You Game? article, which opened the door toward something even more growth-oriented, creating Dads, Games & Growth, a category I want to write more in and to explore, moving forward.

The Numbers and… the Story Behind Them

Now, of course, I also spent some time diving into Substack’s statistics. And while I’m far from an expert at analyzing them, let me share a few. After one year, I ended up with:

• 172 subscribers

• 266 followers

• nearly 10,000 total views

• readers from 32 countries

• and only 13 unsubscribes over the entire year.

And somehow… there are even 4 paid subscribers supporting my little Gamer Dad adventure. Two are family members—which honestly makes me smile every time I think about it… Thank you Mom and Bro! 😁—but the other two were complete surprises that genuinely touched me.
The idea that someone would value my writing enough to financially support it still feels surreal to me. So truly… Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

And then… there are the NOTEs, where I posted a total of 210.
But here’s another surprising factor:

• only 58 were self-promotional (like about upcoming articles, sharing recently posted ones, or some finished youtube videos, etc.)

• while 129 Notes were focused on promoting and supporting others. Restacks with notes. That’s 61%. 😁

Honestly… that feels awesome, as… I’ve been creating online for 10 years now, mostly on YouTube, without ever becoming “big”. So I deeply understand the struggle smaller creators go through. I know how much a simple comment, share or encouraging message can mean.

So naturally, I ended up doing the same for others. In fact, one of my favorite Substack features became the “Also share to Notes“ checkbox while leaving a comment that Restacks the article with that comment. It feels like the perfect combo of appreciation and support.

Also, looking at the recommendation system, I noticed something similar:

• 8 Substacks recommended mine, bringing in 21 subscribers

• while I recommended 14 others, sending 49 subscribers

I love that! Because it reflects a creative growth that feels far more meaningful because it happened alongside others. It is indeed a pleasure of growing together in this Substack Gaming Community. Thank you for having me!

Slowing Down… but Not Stopping

Of course, not everything went according to plan.

In 2026, I wasn’t able to maintain weekly articles anymore. My focus shifted more towards family and YouTube projects. Yet, I remained active through Notes, discussions, collaborations, and about 2 articles per month.

As for the future… I want to continue developing the Dads, Games & Growth direction. I want to create more thoughtful essays. More narrations. More videos. More collaborations… like the one I am planning next: about Gaming and Dreams—check it out in this NOTE and feel free to participate.

And of course… I want to continue sharing games with Junior, and covering them in future Gamer Dad Reviews, as at the center of all this… remain those moments where we sit and game together, discovering new worlds, laughing at our gameplay fails, discussing stories & learning lessons.

Those Dad & Junior moments are Real and worth preserving.

My Final Thoughts

from looking back at this first year?… I honestly think the biggest surprise was discovering how meaningful creating can become when you simply… Start!
Start sharing what genuinely matters to you.

What began as a few personal game reviews slowly transformed into something much more alive: a creative space where gaming, parenting, storytelling, growth, memories, lessons, and community, all came together. 😄 You rarely know where starting a creative endeavor will lead you. Sometimes you simply begin with a small idea, a personal p assion, or a wish to share something meaningful… and slowly, through consistency, experimentation, support from others, and a lot of heart, it evolves into something far bigger than expected.

So once again: Thank you! Thank you for your time and support in this past year.

And for every small creator… keep creating. Keep writing. Keep sharing your thoughts, your stories, and passion with the world, even if growth feels slow at times. Because every article, every video, and every creation teaches and shapes you, slowly making you grow into something better.

Growth is inevitable when you continue creating with heart.

Here’s to more gaming, laughing, sharing and growing together!

And that game is Clustertruck.

A “floor is lava” game… but with trucks. A simple concept, but… pure madness in execution.

Developed by Landfall Games and released in 2016, Clustertruck is a first-person physics-based platformer where you jump across moving trucks to reach the finish line. Touch the ground? And… You’re out.

So, when I showed it to Junior, who loves playing “The Floor is Lava” at home and even watched the Netflix gameshow with excitement, I already had a feeling this would click for him.

I just didn’t anticipate how much.

Jump, Fail, Repeat

At first glance, Clustertruck doesn’t look like much. Minimalist visuals, simple white trucks, low-poly environments… but the moment you start moving, everything changes.

I started by showing him the first 5 levels, mostly to explain the premise and let him understand what this whole truck-jumping business was about. Within minutes, he had some of the widest eyes I’ve ever seen on him.

“Dad… this is AWESOME!” And honestly? That reaction perfectly captures the game.

The trucks are running on weird terrain, so their movement is very unpredictable. They can turn, crash, fall, and get sent flying by obstacles. They move into each other, tilt, flip, explode, and sometimes just decide to fly off into the distance like they have their own plans.

“Wait… why are they flying?!” Junior burst out laughing during one of the early levels.
“Just keep jumping!” I answered, cheering for each of Junior’s successful jump.

There’s a very fine line between difficulty and frustration, and somehow Clustertruck dances right on it. Instead of building tension, it releases it.

The beauty is how fast everything happens. Failure doesn’t feel punishing… it barely registers because the level instantly restarts, and you’re already back in motion, jumping again before your brain even processes the failure. There’s no time to get frustrated, the adrenaline keeps you going, trying again and again and…

And every now and then… something clicks: a perfect chain of jumps, a recovery that shouldn’t have worked, a moment where chaos somehow aligns in your favor.

“Did you see that?!” Junior shouted after managing a move, neither of us expected, a jump over a whole part of the course and right into the finish line. Yeah… I was cool! And both of us would smile as wide as possible before the next level.

Next Level, Next Move Through Madness

The game comes with 9 main Worlds, each containing 10 levels, each world introducing new mechanics, new hazards, and a natural progression in difficulty, so the experience constantly evolves without overstaying its welcome.

Very quickly, we found our own rhythm of playing: each of us would play the 5 levels already completed by the other, then move on to 5 entirely new ones. This way, we had balance, both trying to outdo the other in the played levels, but also experience discovering new tracks in the following ones.

What makes Clustertruck fascinating is how it completely changes the way you think about movement. The levels themselves are designed around high-speed movement, and the instability of the trucks making standing still feel… dangerous. Even when there’s no obvious threat nearby, waiting too long on a truck feels… unsettling, as at any moment they can start a pileup, or run you directly into a trap.

You actually feel safer while moving and the only real relief comes from reaching the finish line.

“I almost had it! I ALMOST had it!” Junior shouted during one particularly brutal run, missing the finish line by a hair.

Each world reinforces this feeling differently. My personal favorites were the Laser and Sci-Fi Worlds. The Laser one demanded real precise movement, forcing me to micro-manage my air position to carefully avoid the laser-beams. The Sci-Fi World, on the other hand, let say it simply embraced spectacle and chaos in the best possible ways.

Junior’s favorites?
“Sci-Fi and Hell!” he answered immediately… “Because everything is crazy there.” Of course it is.

But despite the madness, everything is readable. You usually see danger coming. You feel where you need to go. The game respects your reaction time while constantly pushing your limits. The controls are surprisingly precise, and thankfully also forgiving in smart ways. Like… you can grab the sides or edges of trucks instead of instantly falling, and even better, you can vault yourself upward from those hanging positions to gain extra height, leading to almost flying jumps.

The game also introduces different abilities and tools, and we spent a lot of time experimenting with them. Double Jumps, Teleport, Spawning Trucks… every tool feels useful once you learn how to properly use it. The Jetpack works best when combined with jumps for extra height and air time, while smart grappling can sling you across impossible gaps if timed correctly.

Junior absolutely loved testing everything.

“Dad, I’m flying! Look!” he would say while vaulting and also using the Jetpack for a ridiculous height. At first, his preferred the Jetpack and Freeze Time, mostly because it gave him a sense of control over the madness. But by the end of the game… I think he may have surpassed his old man, as he learned to use my preferred combo of Grappling Hook and Slow Time. I say that because I eventually switched back to the Jetpack for safety during the last Boss-Level in Hell, while he kept grappling through the chaos like a tiny truck-jumping maniac.

Speed Feel and That Perfect Flow

Despite its apparent simplicity, Clustertruck does something really well: it creates flow.

There’s this constant sense of forward momentum. The wind sound, the impact when landing, the music building in the background—it all works together to push you forward.

One clever thing Clustertruck does is make forward movement faster than any other direction. Combined with sprinting, this allows you to launch yourself into massive leaps across entire trucks.

“HOW AM I STILL ALIVE?!” Junior shouted during one run, where a rocket exploded almost every truck beneath him, while he somehow bounced his way onto the last surviving one.

Part of what works so well is the game’s wonderfully chaotic physics system, creating an incredible balance between skill and unpredictability, the game also embracing slapstick comedy in the best possible way. Some failures are so ridiculous that you can’t even be mad at them.

At one point, I watched Junior perfectly clear a difficult section… only for a truck to suddenly cartwheel through the air and smack him right at the finish line.

“NOOOO!” We both burst out laughing, Clustertruck consistently having moments where even failure is entertaining.

Now, beside the trucks, all levels come with their own special dangers: giant hammers swinging across the tracks, lasers beams suddenly blocking your path, missiles raining from the sky, and entire death contraptions that seem designed specifically to ruin your run in the most spectacular way possible (I especially loved the truck-cannons).

Yet despite all this chaos, the game remains surprisingly readable, helped enormously by the game’s simple aesthetics, with very little visual clutter, which means your brain can focus entirely on movement and reaction.

“YES! That was SO COOL!” Junior yelled after grappling a flying truck and be pulled away, barely landing on the edge of another with what honestly looked like pure luck.

As indeed, some of our coolest moments happened completely by accident, with unexpected saves through the use of our abilities. And that makes success feel earned, even when it looks completely accidental.

Why It Worked for Us

• Simple Concept & Instant Recognition – “The Floor is Lava with trucks?” That’s all Junior needed to get hooked.

• Visible Skill Growth – From random jumping to controlled movement, we both felt the improvement.

• Pure Gameplay Joy – No story needed. No waiting, no downtime. Just movement, momentum and flow. Perfect for short bursts or longer sessions.

• Difficulty without Frustration – It’s hard, but never punishing. You’re always one jump away from trying again.

• Memorable Moments – “Did you see that?!” became part of every session.

Father Thoughts

Clustertruck was a weird game for me… because, after finding and trying it on a whim, it reminded me of something simple… but important: it’s awesome to play deep games, to discover hidden meanings, and learn tough lessons through powerful stories. But sometimes… what you really need is a game that simply feels good to play.

And this one? Did exactly that. For me, this remains a game that I keep coming back to during stressful times. As for Junior?

Playing it together added an extra layer of joy on top. It was pure happiness watching him become so ecstatic while playing, fully entering that awesome flow state. I loved seeing him struggle, retrying over and over, eventually overcoming even the toughest levels.

“Argh, I’m gonna beat this one!” he shouted during those harder stages. And he did. Not perfectly, nor cleanly. But the determination was there, accompanied by a lot of jumping, of course.

So maybe, that’s what makes games like this special. They might focus on fun, they might be gameplay-driven… but they still give you something important to experience. A sense of flow, a way to disconnect and simply enjoy the act of playing.

These kinds of games absolutely deserve their place in our libraries, because gaming doesn’t always need to be profound to matter. Sometimes pure fun and a shared laughter are more than enough for both the Gamer Mind and a Gamer Dad’s Soul.

I recently came across the idea of The Johari Window in a video, where it is presented by Destin Sandlin and , and this immediately drew my attention.

At its core, it’s a simple framework, developed in 1955, meant to help us better understand ourselves and our relationships with others. It breaks down our self-awareness into four areas:

1. Open Area – what is known to both you and others (your public self)
2. Blind Spot Area – what others see in you, but you do not see in yourself
3. Hidden Area – what you know about yourself but keep from others (like secrets)
4. Unknown Area – what is unknown to both you and others

Simple… but the implications are anything but.

Through the Knowing Glass

If there’s one thing this model makes clear, it’s that we don’t fully know ourselves… and more importantly, we were never meant to figure that out alone. As Rev. Woodall puts it in his own article on this topic:

“The model illustrates that self-understanding is not achieved in isolation. Rather, it grows through honest self-reflection, feedback from others, and meaningful relationships.” — Daylan Woodall

This idea alone already challenges how we tend to live today. In a fast moving world… our attention is fragmented, constantly pulled in different directions. Even Mr. Woodall wrote:

“Our relationships can be equally numerous and shallow, and our inner lives can become stunted, underdeveloped, and crowded out by noise, distraction, and the relentless pace of modern life.” — Daylan Woodall

And yet, in the middle of all that noise, we are still trying to figure out who we are.
The Johari Window suggests that this process isn’t passive. It requires intention, effort, and courage.

Opening Ourselves Up

I see the Open Area, the part of us that is known both to ourselves and others, as being where we act in the world. It’s where we create, communicate, and influence. It’s where we take what we know about ourselves and make it visible. In a way, this is the only place from which we can truly make an impact—because it’s the only place where others can meet us.

But this space doesn’t grow on its own. As Destin Sandlin explains, expanding this “known” area requires movement in two directions:

“You can expand down into the facade (hidden area) area by disclosing things to other people. You can expand over into the blind spot area by asking for feedback from people that know things about you.” — Destin Sandlin

In other words, growth happens when we are willing to open up… and when we are willing to listen. And neither of those come easy.

Opening up means exposing parts of yourself that were once hidden. Listening means accepting that others may see things in you that you don’t. As Rev. Woodall puts it:

“We have to be open and available to the reality that we're still learning who we are, and that others might have insight into who we are that we haven't noticed. We have to be open and available to the reality that we have blind spots. That's critically and crucially important. That changes the dynamic of human relationships.” — Daylan Woodall

That realization alone can change how we approach relationships… and how we approach growth. But there’s something even more powerful here. Because the more we expand this Open Area, the more we create space for discovery. Not just in what we already know—but in what we don’t.

Playing Into the Unknown

The Unknown Area is perhaps the most fascinating part of the Johari Window. It represents everything about us that has yet to be discovered—by us or by anyone else. You can try to explore this Unknown through Faith and Prayer, by appealing to the One that fully understands us and reveals those unknown aspects… but another way to uncover this is through experience.

Through being placed in situations we didn’t expect. Through reacting, adapting, and sometimes failing. As Destin puts it, exploring this space can come in different ways:

“…another way you could expand down into this unknown area is just by being in situations that you weren't expecting or you see how you react. Whenever I explore, and I'm a curious person, I like to be in places and areas that I don't know a lot of things about and ask questions. I end up learning about myself.” — Destin Sandlin

That’s where something clicked for me. Because this entire process—opening up, receiving feedback, stepping into the unknown—felt very familiar…
It felt like… creating.
It felt like… writing.
And even… gaming.

Think about when you create something—writing an article, designing a game, building anything from your own ideas. You start from what you know, from your Open Area: your experiences, your inspirations, your skills. But the act of creating is also an act of revealing. You are taking something from your Hidden Area and bringing it into the open, sharing it with others… Like I do in this very article. ☺️

And once you do that, feedback follows.

Sometimes encouraging. Sometimes challenging. But always valuable—because it shines a light on your blind spots. It shows you what others see in your work, and by extension, in you. And if you’re willing to receive it, to reflect on it, to build upon it… that’s where real growth happens.

It’s a two-way process. You open up. Others respond. You adjust. And through that cycle, your Open Area expands into the Hidden and Blind Areas.

But then, something else happens too.
You begin to discover things you didn’t know were there.

Gaming in Windowed Mode

Games follow a similar pattern, but from the other side.

As players, we step into worlds created by others. We enter systems, stories, and challenges that invite us to act, decide, and react. And in doing so, we start revealing parts of ourselves—sometimes without even realizing it.

A difficult game exposes our patience… or the lack of it. A story-driven experience reveals empathy, values, emotional depth. A chaotic or fast-paced game might reveal how we handle pressure, failure, or unpredictability.
Even something as simple as realizing, “I’m really not that good at this,” can be a moment of self-discovery.

But more importantly, games place us in situations we would never encounter otherwise. They push us into that Unknown Area. They create safe spaces where we can experiment, fail, and learn—without real-world consequences.

And that’s powerful, because it means that gaming can be more than just consumption… It can be a tool to explore oneself.

Learning Through Play

So… I guess… the Johari Window was for me a reminder that growth requires openness.
That understanding ourselves requires both courage and humility. And that creating, sharing our works, and listening to feedback is stepping into that Unknown.

And maybe gaming—alongside creating—is one of those tools that helps us do exactly that… So, what I would encourage is simple.

Don’t just game to pass the time and feel good. Use it to understand yourselves, to expand what is known, uncover what is hidden, and slowly explore what was once unknown. Try to understand what each game reveals of you. What it can teach. Use it as a tool for growth.

But also… play with others. Share experiences. Talk about what happened, what you felt, what you discovered. Whether it’s playing a game with someone close, like I do with my son, or sharing your thoughts through writing or creating—all these help us grow together through a shared passion, all of us learning about ourselves and others.

Let’s Game… and Grow!

Stick with me, and let’s explore this.

This idea came from a conversation between and David Kipping about advanced civilizations. And, at one point, the discussion turns toward something surprising: Why do we keep building more powerful computers? Or, as Peterson puts it:

“You know, you might ask: What is driving the demand for advanced computational devices now? […] at least part of the answer, is the desire to ever more accurately simulate realities such that games can be played with those simulations.” — Jordan Peterson

Before Games, There Was Thought

Of course this captured my attention! Games? I know Games to be extremely important to us, as a species, but… why not science? Or research?… Well, seems there is more to this.

When you think about it, we as humans are placed in a pretty unforgiving universe. A place where mistakes can have serious, and deadly, consequences. So in order to survive, we need to take in information from the world around us, process it, and adapt. In simpler terms: we need to think, to learn, and we need to change, so that we can stay aligned with reality, or in other words… alive.

Peterson explains this deeper layer as:

“There’s a very deep biological idea in relationship to thought: that the reason that we think, is so that our thoughts can die instead of us.” — Jordan Peterson

That line made me pause and consider… it re-frames thinking itself as a survival tool.

In the real world, mistakes are costly. Sometimes final. But thinking changes the rules!

“… But if you virtualize that, so that your thoughts are now avatars of yourself, you can have your foolish avatars expire and you can continue.” — Jordan Peterson

We create scenarios in our minds. We play them and play with them. And we’ve been doing this our entire lives. As toddlers, as kids, as teenagers, as adults… and hopefully, as old men too.

We Think! Create! Simulate! Learn and Change!… Over and over again.

Stepping Into the Simulation

If we zoom in on that “simulation” part, it also explains something else: why we love stories so much. Stories are simulations created by others, compressed into something we can observe and learn from. That’s why meaningful stories move us and change us. They give us lessons without the need for us to learn through costly failure.

And games?… Games take it one step further.

Think about it.

Games are simulations we actively participate in. Some are realistic, others completely fantastical, but all of them engage us. They pull us into systems where we must act, decide, fail, and try again. They make us learn—not just through observation, but through experience.

Take Dark Souls.

A world where every mistake matters. Where you don’t have tutorials and in game guiding arrows… progress being earned through failure and learning. It’s a system that teaches resilience, patience, and persistence.

Other games, let’s say those focused on telling personal stories, simulate emotional experiences, placing you in situations you may never face, but still learn from.

And then there are puzzle games—pure thought experiments. No grand narrative, no action, nor adventure. Just the mind engaging with patterns, problems, logic and solutions. The mind learning in its most distilled form.

There are so many different games, and different genres. But they all are based on the same core idea. Simulations!

We Think. We Create. We Simulate. We Learn. And we Change.

The Endgame of Intelligence

So it’s only natural that, as our technology evolves. We use it for science and industry, but also to simulate, to play, and more precisely… we use it to game. And, as Peterson notes:

“I don’t think it’s mere fluke that a tremendous amount of the market for high-end computational devices is the market to drive simulation, so that we can play fictional games.” — Jordan Peterson

Now let’s take that idea and push it forward.

If we continue evolving… or if we imagine an advanced civilization somewhere out there in the universe… they would face the same fundamental problem: how to survive, how to adapt, how to understand reality.

And the most powerful tools for that? Simulating experiences and playing games, of course.

“So maybe, advanced civilizations do in fact take off into the fictional game space, because it’s in some ways an infinite domain of potential experimentation.” — Jordan Peterson

And we’re already on that path. Our simulations are getting better. Our games are getting greater. Our virtual worlds are becoming more immersive. We are constantly pushing toward more detailed, more meaningful, and more complex ways to explore reality—without the cost of failing in it.

So maybe gaming is more than entertainment. Maybe it’s something fundamental. A natural extension of intelligence itself.

A way to survive.
A way to understand.
A way to explore the infinite space of “what if”.

And if that’s true… then any advanced civilization out there would likely follow a similar path. They would simulate. They would experiment. They would create worlds, and play.

So yeah.

Hello everybody! I’m ROP, your resident Gamer Dad, and this time our adventure took us to a very small place… yet, somehow, surprisingly vast. Sometimes the most fascinating worlds are the ones hiding right beneath… a leaf. So indeed, we dived into a world of weird plants and insects through Botanicula.

Developed by Amanita Design and released in 2012, it invites you to peer into a macroscopic world of plants, insects, and strange little creatures—a world that feels like someone mixed Pixar animations, a nature documentary, and the surreal imagination of a Studio Ghibli forest.

Playing it with Junior felt like opening a tiny window into a world we didn’t know existed. Or maybe… one we had simply forgotten to look at. I remember that, when I was a kid, I would sometimes take a magnifying glass and stare at the ground in the garden, following trails of ants carrying pieces of bread that were a bit too large for their size… or so I thought. At that scale, everything looked weird, mysterious and full of life.

Botanicula gave me that exact same feeling. Except this time, I wasn’t alone. “Dad… what are those creatures?” Junior asked during the first few minutes. I wasn’t entirely sure myself. And that was part of the magic.

A Tiny World Full of Strange Life

If there is one thing Botanicula does exceptionally well, it’s animation. The moment the game begins, you immediately notice that every single element in this world feels alive. Leaves tremble when touched. Flowers stretch and react to your cursor. Strange insects blink, wiggle, squeak, and bounce around the branches.

Behind this wonderful sense of life is the same Czech studio that brought us games like Machinarium and the Samorost series. And behind Botanicula, sits Jaromír Plachý, illustrator and film director whose influence is immediately visible. The game often feels less like a traditional video game and more like a beautifully animated short film where you’re allowed to click everything, to see what happens.

And believe me… you’ll want to click everything! This is one of those rare point-and-click adventures where curiosity becomes the driving mechanic. Every click is rewarded with a small animation, a quirky sound, or some strange reaction from the world. Sometimes it progresses the story. Sometimes it does absolutely nothing useful… but it always makes you smile.

“Dad! Click that leaf!” Junior instructed me more than once. Click. And a bug wiggled, squeaked, and moved to another leaf. Junior bursting into laughter. “Again! Click the other leaf!” And so we clicked again. This time the bug moved back, but holding a fruit. Then two. Then a pumpkin that surely wouldn’t fit under a leaf. Then… it celebrated Halloween?! “Wait! What?! When did the bug carve out that Halloween pumpkin?” Oh, how we laughed, as there were more surprises after that.

The game embraces imagination to the extreme. Instead of chasing realism, Botanicula runs happily in the opposite direction—toward surrealism. The world is built from familiar elements: plants, mushrooms, insects, branches, seeds and more. Yet each of them behaves in ways that are wonderfully strange and unexpected.

The creatures themselves are fantastic. Not traditionally cute, but what Junior would call weirdly cute, similar with our previous explored game, Little Inferno.

Some, look like walking seeds, others like wobbly mushrooms or nervous twigs. Their movements, their sounds, even the way they react to the environment reveal an incredible amount of creativity and attention to detail.

Out of our team of botanical-heroes, Junior quickly picked a favorite: “The mushroom is the best!” he declared confidently. And honestly… he had a point. The mushroom can be stealthy, bouncy, and surprisingly athletic. At one point it even ended up winning a ridiculous little “head tennis” mini-game, bouncing the ball back with impressive enthusiasm. “See? I told you!” Junior said proudly.

Click Everything, to See What Happens

Botanicula is technically a point-and-click adventure, but in practice it feels closer to an exploration game. Instead of complex puzzle chains or inventory management, the game focuses on experimentation and discovery.

You guide five small tree creatures through a journey to save their home tree from strange parasitic spiders feeding on its life force. None of them are traditional heroes. They aren’t warriors or chosen ones. They’re just… residents of the tree, normal little inhabitants who decide to help.

It’s a story about teamwork and friendship more than anything else. Throughout the adventure you often need to choose which character should interact with a particular obstacle, and Junior absolutely loved these moments.

“Wait… try the mushroom!”
“No, no… the twig guy!”
“Dad! Now send the flying one!”

Sometimes we picked right. Most of the time, we were very wrong. But that was part of the fun, as the way they failed is as fun and surprising as when they succeed. We started to hope we DON’T pick the right one, just to see all the endearing animations.

The game is full of small puzzles, but they rarely feel punishing. Instead, they encourage the same exploration and playful experimentation, as there is no tutorial and no obvious hint system, the solutions often come from simply trying things out.

Pull. Poke. Move. Wiggle the mouse. Or, as Junior preferred: “Let’s just click everything!” And surprisingly often… that worked.

There were a few moments where frustration crept in, especially when we missed the correct interaction several times in a row. But even then, the game rarely leaves you stuck for long. Eventually curiosity leads you toward the right path. Some of our favorite sections were the little “fetch quest” puzzles scattered throughout the tree world, where we had to find or collect strange items for oddball characters.

Another fun element was the collectible insect cards hidden throughout the game. By interacting with different creatures and environments, we slowly unlocked these little discoveries, which encouraged us to explore every corner of a world worth exploring.

It’s full of painterly scenes filled with sunshine, strange contraptions, tiny towns, and bizarre plant machinery. One of Junior’s favorite location was the little tree town where we needed to find some weird chickens by exploring each house and meeting all the town’s weird-folk. And indeed, meeting the odd inhabitants of that town became a whole adventure of its own. “Dad… this place is soo weird!” he said, and he meant it as a compliment.

A Forest That Sings

If the visuals make Botanicula feel alive, the sound design makes it feel magical.

Unlike most games, Botanicula contains almost no traditional dialogue. Instead, communication happens through small vocal sounds, gibberish, and expressive animations. And here’s the wonderful twist: many of these sounds are created entirely with human voices. Clicks, pops, squeaks, creaks, little musical notes—many of them are vocal effects performed by people rather than traditional instruments. And the result feels handcrafted in the best possible way… just like the visuals.

The soundtrack, composed by the alternative band DVA, moves beautifully between joyful melodies and wonderfully weird musical moments. Folk instruments, jazz influences, playful rhythms, and experimental sounds blend together into something that feels both relaxing, joyful and unpredictable.

Sometimes the music is cheerful and uplifting, especially after solving a puzzle or helping a character. Moments that became small celebrations for us.

Junior especially loved the musical puzzles scattered throughout the game. Whenever we solved one, the characters would reward us with a wholesome little melody performed by the inhabitants of the forest. “Play it again!” Junior would say with a grin.

Another unexpected layer of charm came from something we hadn’t anticipated at all: how familiar some of the sounds felt to us, as Romanians. The developers are Czech, and while the game contains no real spoken dialogue, the playful gibberish and vocal sound effects, the rhythm and structure of the sounds often felt strangely close to our own language. Czech and Romanian share certain morphological similarities: the way syllables flow, the length of words, even the frequency of vowels, along their interjections and onomatopoeias being, many times, identical to ours. Because of that, many of the small vocal reactions and playful noises made by the creatures sounded almost… Romanian to our ears. Sometimes we’d hear a satisfying “Opaa!” or a cheerful “Yohoo!” and… we’d look at each other laughing because it sounded exactly how we reacted. It made the world feel oddly familiar despite how surreal everything looked.

Of course, Botanicula isn’t all sunshine and silly bugs. As the story progresses, the atmosphere becomes darker when the heroes venture into the territory of the parasitic spiders threatening the tree. And one of them… was genuinely terrifying. The main large spider with a glowing red eye. Junior was not a fan. “That one is scary, Dad.” he whispered the first time we saw it. In fact, that spider made such an impression that Junior even had a nightmare about it.

But even these darker moments serve the story well. They create contrast and give weight to the heroes’ mission. Because despite the weird humor and playful tone, Botanicula ultimately tells a meaningful story about protecting nature, about friendship, and about standing together against something destructive.

Brains over brawn. Curiosity over fear. And teamwork over heroics.

Why It Worked for Us

• A Wonderfully Weird World: The creature designs, animations, and environments are endlessly imaginative and full of charm, driving the exploration and game progression.

• Music That Feels Alive: Handcrafted sounds and uplifting melodies make every interaction feel surprising and every puzzle, rewarding.

• Teamwork Gameplay: Choosing which character to use and solving puzzles together made the experience perfect for a parent-kid collaboration.

• A Small Journey With Big Imagination: The journey may take only 4 hours, but the world it creates feels much larger than that.

• Romanian-Sounding Victories: The cheerful shout of “Ura!” after solving puzzles became a tiny detail that made us celebrate along with the characters every time it happened.

Father Thoughts

Botanicula reminded me of something important about point-and-click adventure games. The best ones make you real curious about the world, inviting you to explore, to observe little details you might otherwise miss.

Watching Junior experience this world was a joy in itself. Every strange creature, every unexpected animation, every surprising sound became another moment of discovery. “Dad… what do you think will happen if we click that?” became a common question in our playthrough, when we both tried to imagine the result, yet the game would always take an even more imaginative route.

Every time we clicked, something delightful happened. And by the time the adventure ended, Junior had only one complaint… “Is there more?” Honestly… I asked myself the same thing. Because by the end, Botanicula feels like one grand, dazzling adventure packed into a tiny world, that you want to keep exploring.

And that tells us that the most fascinating universes can be found in the littlest of places, and packed in the littles of packages, especially when you put so much care, love and imagination into them. Thank you, Amanita Design!

Hello everybody! February has just passed us by, full of hearts, gestures of love, and reminders to hold our loved ones closer. And now, as we step into March—with its celebrations of mothers, and even families—we remain in that same space… one that is focused on the people who are shaping our lives.

As someone who games as a father and a husband, I am realizing that some of the most powerful stories found in games are not always about saving kingdoms or defeating villains… they’re about families and relationships. And when games reflect those struggles, compromises, and bonds… they should be able to reach us in a much more direct and personal way. Yet, upon searching for some of these, sadly… I’ve found that games don’t explore this space nearly enough.

Thus, I want to highlight and share with you a small list of games that delve into families, relationships, and the love required for these bonds to last.

2. It Takes Two

Few games embody the idea of rebuilding a relationship like It Takes Two. You play as a couple on the brink of separation, magically transformed into dolls and forced to work together through imaginative, and ever-changing challenges. Mechanically, the game constantly requires cooperation—mirroring the emotional work happening beneath the surface. It’s playful, heartfelt, and at times surprisingly honest about the difficulty of staying together. It is a beautiful reminder that relationships need more than once-in-a while grand gesture, they require continuous effort, patience, and a willing to change while creating long lasting bonds.

3. That Dragon, Cancer

This one is not an easy game to play. It is a deeply personal, journal-like experience, created by parents processing their child’s battle with… That Dragon!… Cancer. You don’t really play the “game” in the traditional sense, you take part in it’s emotional journey through love, grief, faith, hope and… helplessness. As a parent myself, I kind of… teared the whole way through, as this one hits on a level few games ever reach, digging up painful memories and feelings of your own. I consider this a testament for showing how strong love can be… even in the face of the… unimaginable. Sigh!

4. Venba

This is a small, indie game that tells the story of an Indian mother who immigrates to Canada in the '80s with her husband, building a life far from home while trying not to lose what made it feel like home in the first place. It’s a story that unfolds over years, yet focusing on subtle tensions and sacrifices that shape a family. At its core, it is a narrative cooking game mixing visual novel elements and puzzle-focused cooking segments to great effect. As Venba cooks, each dish becomes filled with meaning—it becomes a bridge between generations. A way for a mother to speak love when words cannot reach, and a way for a child to rediscover roots he doesn’t fully understand.
In a way… I guess the game uses cooking, like I use gaming with my son. Both activities building bonds and strengthening the relationship.

5. The Novelist

What happens when you can’t give 100% to everything at once? The Novelist explores the internal struggle of a father trying to write the most important book of his career, while also balancing his marriage and his role as a parent. And you? You step into the story as a mysterious ghostly presence, able to explore the family’s thoughts and memories, uncover their desires, and influence their decisions. But be careful… as every decision has consequences and… the path you choose may reveal something about yourself as well.
In the end, this becomes a deeply reflective experience that mirrors a truth many of us live every day: love often means compromise, and sometimes the hardest choices come from wanting to do right by everyone.

6. Haven

Haven tells a different kind of Romeo and Juliet story—of two lovers who give up everything and flee to a forgotten planet. Mechanically, it’s not a game built on complexity, it can feel repetitive… but this simplicity feels intentional, because the real focus is on who you experience it with. Everything in Haven revolves around the relationship. You explore together, fight together, gather resources together, cook together, slowly carve out a life in a place that doesn’t quite want you there. In doing so, every system becomes a metaphor for partnership and all that it involves: communication, trust, affection, even compromise.
It’s rare to see a game portray a relationship with this kind of everyday authenticity. A lived-in, comfortable, sometimes awkward reality of building a life with someone over time.

7. Octodad: Dadliest Catch

Yes, it’s absurd. Hilarious?! Also yes. But beneath the chaos of controlling a spaghetti-limbed octopus that is also trying to keep his cephalopodan nature a secret from his human family… lies something surprisingly relatable. Octodad captures the everyday struggle of parenthood—the mundane tasks that become unwieldy challenges, the effort to hold everything together, and the constant desire to be present for your family… even when you feel completely out of your depth. It’s a comedy of accidental destruction, it’s heartwarming chaos, it’s a dad doing his best for the family he loves… in a typical dad way. 😉

Final Thoughts

These games are wildly different in tone. Some heavy, some hopeful, some playful… but they all explore something we too rarely see in games: Love in its everyday form. So not within an epic adventure that saves the world… but inside a family that holds together, or following a long term relationship that grows through shared experiences. Through effort. Through patience. Through the ordinary and the difficult.

As gamers, we often celebrate heroes, victories, and grand journeys… which make for some truly awesome stories, but sometimes… the most meaningful, are the ones that feel closest to home. The ones about… a life like ours.

Hello everybody! It was cool to recently hear in one of his Youtube videos, how he likes to unwind from a long day using a hardcore shooter—DOOM. I was never into DOOM, but this made me nostalgic about a few adrenaline driven games that I would relax to. In terms of shooters, my choice remains Serious Sam, but… another way my adrenaline was pumped to the point of relaxation… is through Speed Games!

And here we have… a game that is mostly forgotten, but I still remember for one thing only: The SPEED! And that game is: Ballistics—The Fastest Game Ever Made!

I first played Ballistics in the early 2000s, a few years after its release, back when PC games still came with the unspoken promise that they’ll melt your hardware. 😁Reinstalling it recently, decades later, I expected the magic to be a fluke, memories filtered through nostalgia… but… It wasn’t.

If anything, the speed still hits just as hard. Hard enough that, honestly… the game probably deserves an Epilepsy Warning before the main menu. 😅

So, developed by GRIN (which has one cool logo) and released in 2001, Ballistics was marketed as The Fastest Racing Game On Earth—and unlike most marketing claims, this one was absolutely true, and Still. Is. Today. I remember NVIDIA even used it as a showcase title for the launch of their GeForce 3 Series, alongside Aquanox, and… to this day, no other racer has truly surpassed what Ballistics did best.

The True and Literal Need for Speed

Once you can get past its famously bugged installer—still cheerfully reporting progress well beyond 200%:

…what awaits is a sensation of speed that very few games have ever managed to transmit.

Set in the year 2090, Ballistics places you on futuristic hoverbikes racing through tubular tracks suspended in cool landscapes. These aren’t the traditional racing roads. They’re enclosed tubes, and your speeder is magnetically attached to their surface, allowing full 360-degree movement along the tube’s interior.

This single design choice defines the entire game, because the tracks curve and twist. So, rolling to the outside of a curve lets you maintain your speed, while hugging the interior, means bleeding momentum and even detaching from the track. Learning the cleanest racing line becomes essential to win and, most importantly, to reach what Ballistics does best: Sustained HyperSonic Flow.

Yeah! You heard me. Hypersonic! 🤩
Breaking the sound barrier is a moment you never forget: You accelerate, you boost, you do your best to stay in the optimal position, the engine screams, flickers, heats up, the landscape stretches and finally blurs… as you break the sound barrier.

The sonic boom hits, then suddenly—silence. All sound effects drop away in the background, except the rush of wind. In this brief stretch of time, your adrenaline is pumping crazy, trying to slow down time and managing it… because you’re no longer on a roaring engine. You’re floating. Silent running. Relaxing while at Mach speeds, sustained not by the brute force of the engine, but by your rhythm, reaction and memory of the track.

That feeling—maintaining Mach speeds across an entire course rather than just hitting record numbers on straightaways—is far more satisfying than any leaderboard stat.

Graphically, Ballistics still holds up better than expected. When everything on screen is motion, textures and fine scenery matter less. In fact, the rare moments when you do notice the environments can be dangerous, as there are transparent glass tubes and… actually, I remember I’ve lost more races than I care to admit by admiring the scenery at precisely the wrong moment.

Finally, winning races earns you cash, which you use to upgrade your hoverbike—improving acceleration, top speed, heat handling and other stats. At first, everything feels a bit sluggish, relying on boosters to reach Mach Speeds. True speed only comes once upgrades stack and they start pushing you further and faster, when… Ballistics Gets Bonkers Fast. 🙂

Mechanics Under Pressure

The mechanics supporting this sensation are deceptively deep. Your base acceleration is weak, especially at start, and true speed comes from boosts. Yellow boost bands charge your boost meter, functioning much like NOS in NFS games. Hit boost and Mach 1 becomes trivial. Mach 2? That takes discipline. And the Max Speed?… well, I never found the absolute max… but rest assured, It’s Over 3,000! km/h, meaning it gets close to Mach 3.

Boosting also generates heat, and managing it becomes a constant negotiation. You can slow down manually to cool off, but that kills momentum, as this acts as a break. Blue Cooldown bands help, but at extreme speeds you pass over them too quickly for much effect. The real lifesavers is the Super Cooldown PowerUp—placed dead center in the track. To grab them, you must detach magnetically of the tube, drift into open space, collect the power-up, and reattach on the opposite side. Quite a cool mechanic.

Yet, this intensity comes at a cost. There are only seven tracks, two available at the start, and repetition sets in fairly fast. Memorization is mandatory, and once you know a track well enough, winning becomes inevitable as AI opponents barely matter at over Mach 2 speeds. Yet, they can still feel too aggressive at the highest difficulty level.

Also, there are obstacles. And you guessed it! At extreme speeds, they often appear with little warning, avoiding them feeling less like a test of skill and more like a toss of a coin. At Mach 2, reaction time becomes a luxury you simply don’t have. So crashes can feel unfair, until you learn the track and find the optimal path through it.

In a strange way, this focus on memorization and repetition mirrors real-world racing—like Formula 1 or even Bobsledding—where mastery over tracks replaces the moment to moment competition found in normal racing games. So, once you’re fast enough, the only remaining challenge is yourself.

A Short-Lived Phenomenon

And this is where Ballistics reveals its limits.

The fascination is not sustained over long periods. Once you learn the tracks and master the control, there’s little left to discover. The challenge becomes self-imposed: cleaner runs, smoother lines, longer silent stretches at impossible speeds. For a few hours, it’s exhilarating. Then, slowly, the repetition dulls the edge.

Ballistics is a phenomenon, not a regular racing game. A passing experience, rather than long-term commitment. Yet, what it does offer is unforgettable.

What I remember most—beyond being “the fastest racing game ever”—is something physical. Ballistics is the only game that ever pushed me backward off my chair. Not metaphorically. Literally. The sensation of speed makes you lean back, without realizing it, and… little by little, I did so. Until a point, when the chair legs were no longer where I thought they were, and the center of gravity shifted! In that exact moment—both in-game and in real life—I lost control. My speeder took the next tubular curve too fast, detaching from the surface due to the sheer velocity… and me?! I detached from the mouse and keyboard, and went down with the chair.

No other game has done that before or since.

Final Thoughts

Ballistics remains an amazing experience. The speed shock hits like a truck. And when you get in the zone—chain boosting perfectly, keeping heat under control, and sustaining hypersonic speeds—the pleasure is almost euphoric.

It hasn’t aged in the way many games from its era have. The graphics still work because they serve motion, rather than static beauty. The mechanics still feel sharp. What it lacks is longevity, not brilliance.

And that’s where Ballistics quietly fades, as today… Ballistics survives as abandonware. A relic of a moment in PC gaming that passed as quickly as its speeds, leaving behind a brilliant but isolated experiment. There are no sequels, remasters or remakes that capture what it did.

In a way, that feels fitting. Ballistics was never about staying power. It is about the experience of a moment—about overwhelming your senses, pushing your body back into a chair, and reminding you what raw speed feels like.

Hello everybody! I’m ROP, your resident Gamer Dad, back after my latest trip with Junior—this time into one of the biggest small games I’ve ever played.

Why do we love indie games so much? Because they are small things that, have the potential to pack a big, perspective-changing punch. That’s exactly the case with the most Surprising and most Cozy Winter Game out there: Little Inferno.

Side note: I’m convinced it’s also the perfect game to play while battling a winter’s common cold.

So… Little Inferno is simple and fun… and just when you think you’ve seen all it has to burn, you are surprised with something more. Something deeper. Something that leaves you with unexpected deep thoughts and emotions long after the fireplace cools down.

Released in 2012 by Tomorrow Corporation—an indie studio founded by three former EA developers: Kyle Gabler, Allan Blomquist, and Kyle Gray—this game already hints at its personality through meta humor, as I love how Tomorrow Corporation also exists as an in-game company.

If I had to define Little Inferno in one breath, it is… A short, atmospheric, surreal indie game with casual single-player puzzle mechanics wrapped within a narrative point-and-click framework, blending parody, satire, and dark humor.

Alright. Let’s light a match, and see what there is to be discovered.

The Fireplace at the Center of Everything

You’re presented with a single screen: an interactive fireplace. You buy products. You burn them, and turn them into coins. You use those coins to buy more things… to burn again. That’s it. That’s the loop. Simple, yet effective.

From the very first moments, Little Inferno teaches you its language. Tutorial? Burn it. Terms and conditions? Burn them too. Everything exists just as fuel for the fire.

As expected, burning things is instantly gratifying, and Junior wholeheartedly agreed. With every new item he discovered, he leaned in and asked: “Woah… and what happens if I burn this one?” And the game answers that curiosity every single time.

To put it bluntly, you pay coins to buy things to burn, to unlock more things, to burn and get more coins, to buy more catalogs with things to buy and burn away.

Simple? Could be. Boring? Sounds so. Why not? Because of how Little Inferno tell’s its story, layers its systems, shapes its style, and how it hides something far beyond the act of burning.

A Frozen World in Need of Warmth

We are faced with a world where winter has become unending and increasingly colder… so, in order to survive, people had turned to burning… EVERYTHING! Toys. Books. Letters. Food. Games. Every personal object. Every useful item. Memories and memoirs. And even time itself… all in order to stay warm.

Entertainment has collapsed into a single device: the Little Inferno Entertainment Fireplace. One box. One screen. One endless source of warmth and distraction. By burning everything else, people stay warm—and strangely enough, entertained.

It’s pyromania as comfort. Destruction as pastime. And yes… it’s fun.

Burning through Endless Surprises

The game stays engaging through a steady progression of catalogs and item tiers. Purchased items take time to be delivered—anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 minutes—so the game also introduces stamps, a second currency that lets you instantly deliver items.

Junior immediately latched onto this system. “So coins buy things… and stamps make them come faster? That’s cool. We need stamps in Real Life too!”

There are also achievements, in the form of combos (99 of them), which are mini puzzles achieved by burning specific items together. Some are obvious—like the Springtime combo, achieved by burning a clock along with a pack of flower seeds— others, cryptic enough to encourage careful reading and experimentation.

And those items? They’re never just “things…” Some behave as expected—like wooden cubes that burn when lit. Others interact, transform, freeze, explode, infect, attract, or disrupt everything on screen. Discovery never stops—not until the final catalog, the final combo, the final burn.

Junior loved the themed catalogs—like Totally Recalled Toys, Snooty Foodie and 1st Person Shopper—and especially the strange interactions, like when he found the leper infected Toy Leperchaun: “That doll is sick! And it makes other things sick too! Don’t touch it! Just burn it!”

And his favorite combo? Was the infamous ERRRROR ERR@R ER*#^%R COMBo where everything would bug out and… well, I’ll let you discover the rest.

A Visual Combo: Cute, Dark, and Weird

As you explore Little Inferno’s item visual design, you’ll find that it walks a razor-thin line. Some items are basic—wooden blocks. Some are playful. Some are hilarious. Others are… questionable. (Like, there are buses with… people on board?!)

The item descriptions deserve special praise. If you enjoy environmental storytelling through text—Dark Souls-style—you’ll love these. They’re packed with satire, references, dad jokes, and just enough dark humor to make you pause before lighting the match.

Visually, the game feels like a Tim Burton-inspired children’s coloring book made for a Family Addams toddler—cute, clumsy, unsettling, and oddly charming all at once.

The scary elements are handled with restraint, and Junior found them “cool” rather than frightening… or, as he puts it: “It looks spooky… but funny spooky.”

At one point, the game becomes subtly self-aware—just enough to make you aware. Are you playing the game… or is the game playing you? Can you turn around? No?! What about in Real Life? And this brings us in the next part of why I love this game.

Characters and Letters from Beyond the Fire

Beneath the constant burning, you are greeted by a surprisingly heartfelt narrative, delivered slowly through letters from a small cast of endearing characters. Each one playing an important part and even having the space to grow and change. So, you’ll definitely start cherishing each letter, well… until you burn it, like everything else.

By the time the story fully steps into the foreground, Little Inferno shifts gears entirely. Gameplay changes. Perspective widens. The soundtrack swells. And suddenly, you’re asked to look beyond the fireplace… maybe even visit Tomorrow Corporation headquarters itself.

And speaking of the soundtrack, it was composed by Kyle Gabler, drawing inspiration from the 80s and 90s film scores, and it fits the game perfectly—warm, melancholic, and haunting, when it needs to be. Junior loved the main theme so much, he learned to sing it himself.

What the Fire Is Really Saying

Little Inferno doesn’t force its themes on you, but they’re there if you listen.

• Addiction to entertainment might be one theme—don’t waste all your time.

• Anti-consumerism another theme—as modern consumerism demands constant attention to the "newest and bestest" and to have all, to collect all, consume and complete all, which in the end… all will burn.

• Technological Dystopianism or Algorithmic Serfdom… yeah, you can go that deep theme wise—both of these relating to the fight against an all powerful company dreaming to make the absolute product/show/game-as-a-service using all the psychological tricks in the book, in order to keep you glued and never to… Turn Around! Can you Turn around? I dare you!

  

• The world beyond is another theme. A world that is waiting for you to take the first steps into it, a world that’ll take off your shackles and offer full real freedom, but without the possibility to go back… Do you remember where this was explored? Where were humans used as heat batteries? Is the Matrix real? Will you take the Red Pill? Can you Turn Around? Knowing that you cannot turn back?

• Courage to change, courage to discover, can also be explored. Comfort is good, but not as an end goal in which to spend all our days of our life. It might sound comforting, but this is actually a cage that will keep you glued to the entertainment of your choice. Or even… to keep you glued to a job you despise. Or to a bad habit you keep falling back into. Will you turn around?

We are creatures of change. We are build to explore, discover, LIVE. We are created to be free. That is the message! Turn Around! Go beyond! See what’s there! Experience! Create! LIVE a Real Life and Change into a better You!… Just like, Sugar Plums did.

Sugar Plums… her transformation captures this beautifully. What looks like a deadly mistake is actually rebirth. Growth framed as loss. The old self burning away to make room for the new.

Why It Worked for Us

While I was in deep thinking territory throughout this game, Junior focused mostly on the fun—and that’s okay. Little Inferno works because it speaks to different ages in different ways. Kids play. Parents reflect. Everyone feels something.

Yet, some lessons are clearly delivered:

• While we played and completed all within the game—buying each item 3 times, for the golden borders and getting all combos—we were stuck, we did not turn around. Yet, at the end, when Junior met the delivery man… “Wait what? There was a delivery man there the whole time?!” Yeah, and we couldn’t even turn around to see him!!!
  Lesson: If you never stop and look around, you won’t notice what you’re missing.

• And then there was Miss Nancy. our lovely grandma character, which confesses at one point that she had lots of dreams, but she doesn’t know where the time has gone. I gave Junior a clue… the Fireplace! “The time burned too?! But how can time burn?” It burned away with all the other things, I answered. Time itself! While you were burning all that stuff in front of the Little Inferno Entertainment Fireplace, you are also burning away your actual time, time that you took to complete the game. And all the borders. And all the combos.
  Lesson: Time matters—and how you use it matters even more.

Final Thoughts

So in the end, Little Inferno is a wonderful game. The depth is there, the messages are clear. But the game understands the value of fun and entertainment, of a break to relax and disconnect. If you want that, it has the content and even a DLC with the same campaign, but updated and enhanced with even more catalogs and items, with a new story and characters.

Yet, if you like to look into what’s beyond the art created by a developer, or 3… you have tons of material to make you think, as the game uses its mechanics as a metaphor for wasted lives, and asks you to contemplate, to choose to live your life, to have courage & change into a better person.

It’s a small and simple game, cute and funny, but filled to the brim with food for thought. We need more games like this!

I realized that Junior had never seen anything quite like it. No long-running series. No martial arts. No story where training, failure, friendship, and perseverance sit at the very center of the experience and are interwoven through the whole multi-ordeal and multi-faceted story. So… I finally introduced my son to Goku and the strange, charming, and endlessly adventurous world of… Dragon Ball.

We didn’t rush it. Dragon Ball became part of our lives, for a time. A few evenings per week, one or two episodes—after homework was done, after the house quieted down. Other times, especially during school vacations, we’d plan it properly: popcorn, blankets, five to seven episodes in a row. We’d cheer like we were watching a football match, except the field was a martial arts arena and the players were throwing punches that bent the rules of gravity.
At one point, during the final tournament, Junior jumped up and yelled, “Come on, Goku. You can still win this!”
I smiled, because I knew what was to come.

Originally aired in 1986, created by Akira Toriyama and adapted by Toei Animation, the original Dragon Ball spans 153 episodes and forms the foundation of everything that followed—Dragon Ball Z and beyond. But watching it now, with my son beside me, it didn’t feel like a prequel or a stepping stone. It felt like its own complete journey. One worth taking a second time and hopefully, a future third time as well. 😉

The Playground that invites a Journey

One of the first things that struck Junior—and surprised me all over again—was how cute the world is. Dragon Ball’s environments are built from round shapes, soft lines, and expressive designs. Everything feels approachable, almost cozy, even when danger was in full… “This world has DINOSAURS!?... They are kind of cute.” Junior said early on, after one of Goku’s encounters with one.

And that friendliness hides an endlessly expanding world. Forests, deserts, mountains, rivers, islands, cities, rural villages, secret places above the clouds and deep below the earth—Dragon Ball constantly opens new doors. Just when you think you’ve seen everything, the map grows again. It’s a world designed for curiosity and exploration.

And what really elevates it, is how Toriyama blends humor and heart within the world, through the characters. A dramatic fight might be followed by a ridiculous misunderstanding. A tense moment might dissolve into comedy through Goku’s innocence or Roshi’s antics. And I feel, that these lighter beats don’t weaken the journey—they balance it. They make the world feel alive, unpredictable, and… curiously endearing.

Junior laughed constantly at the interactions between Goku and Bulma, and even more at Master Roshi’s exaggerated behavior. And yes… that did lead to some conversations:
“Dad… why is he acting like that?”
“That,” I explained, “is an example of how NOT to behave...”
Dragon Ball doesn’t always age perfectly—but it knows when to call itself out.

The Road Trip to A Hero’s Journey

At the start, Dragon Ball feels like a road trip. A journey across a charming world, driven by curiosity and small goals that slowly grow into something much larger. Early on, the quest is simple, almost playful, just gather a few Dragon Balls using Bulma’s radar. It’s the perfect entry point for Junior—light stakes, clear objectives, and a sense of adventure that pulls you forward, into the journey.

Even though Goku is inspired by Journey to the West and Sun Wukong, watching him with Junior gave the story more of a David versus Goliath flavor. This is because Goku is just a kid… small, underestimated, often dismissed. And his opponents are almost always larger, older, more intimidating.

“He’s tiny, but…Why does everyone think he’s weak?” Junior wondered during one fight. This made us both cheer for the little guy, and yeah… I was actually cheering again. 😁

On Junior’s side, the real hook came once Goku and Krillin began training under Master Roshi, and I feel training becomes the language of Dragon Ball. Improvement isn’t instant. Progress is earned. And that culminates beautifully in the first martial arts tournament. Watching Junior react to that arc—seeing growth, setbacks, victories, losses; seeing friendships forming and how all can impact communities for good—this is where, I realized, the series had truly clicked for him.

Dragon Ball starts with a simple idea: magical orbs that grant wishes. But it doesn’t stay simple. The first time the dragon is summoned, we see just how dangerous those wishes can be in the wrong hands. Over time, the story deepens—revealing origins, consequences, and responsibilities tied to that power. The world gains weight.

As for Goku, this is his Hero’s Journey in full form. Yes, he is powerful. Sometimes absurdly so. But Dragon Ball never pretends that power alone is enough. Goku fails. He’s beaten. He’s overwhelmed. Sometimes even defeated. But one thing is always clear, he Never Gives Up. He get’s back on his feet and tries again, giving proper respect to the challenge ahead and learning from mistakes.
Junior noticed this too.
“He never gives up, does he?”
“No.” I smiled. “That’s what makes him a hero!”
So failures in Dragon Ball are steps to improvement. Lessons and reasons to train harder, and come back stronger. Goku never stops trying, but he also never ignores his limitations. So he trains more. He endures. He accepts help from friends. And in doing so, he becomes someone worth rooting for.

There are also deeply wholesome moments. Like when Goku reunites with his Grandpa—the first time we see him truly emotional and vulnerable, in a way that feels instantly familiar to any child missing a parent. Or when the first villain who actually defeats Goku appears: Mercenary Tao. That loss leads to the climb of Korin’s Tower, to real training, real effort. And later, when Tao attempts the same climb, the lesson lands clearly—there are no shortcuts to growth. Only REAL work.

The sagas grow in scale beautifully: starting with a journey, but experiencing tournaments, adventures against world dominating armies, and Piccolo arcs, where the stakes become real, where we truly see Goku’s determination and resolve, and how he was able to overcome his greatest enemy yet.
Was awesome to see Junior’s invested expressions and cheers during this saga.
Roshi’s death hit hard. Junior went quiet.
“Is… is he really gone?”
And then, later, when Goku returned for the final confrontation, only to realize he still wasn’t strong enough—Junior leaned forward, tensing, and asking “But… didn’t he train enough?”… I realized that even I held my breath along with Junior’s. But, against all odds, Goku managed to pull off a last BIG punch to defeat Piccolo. Memorable! The final victory felt desperate, but fully earned.

The Companions that Shape the Journey

Dragon Ball is packed with charming, expressive characters. Goku, Bulma, Krillin, Roshi, Yamcha, Tien, Lunch, and many more—each one distinct, memorable, and full of personality.

Goku stands at the center as a perfect guide into this world. Innocent, genuine, endlessly curious. He’s discovering the world alongside the viewer, which makes him ideal for newcomers—especially kids. He’s energetic, kind, and powerful in a way that feels aspirational rather than… distant.

What makes Goku special is that we see him grow. He starts the series around 11 years old and ends it at 18. We watch him mature emotionally, mentally and even physically; learning restraint, discipline, kindness, and responsibility. Learning about his limitations, overcoming them and becoming physically and mentally stronger. He doesn’t lose his innocence—but gains depth, ultimately becoming a better and a more complex person than we could’ve envisioned.

The supporting cast shines just as brightly. Krillin’s journey from a sneaky trainee to dedicated martial artist resonated strongly.
“That’s not fair… he’s trying to skip the hard part.” Junior frowned during one training scene.
“Yeah,” I smiled, “but he’ll realize that real progress doesn’t come from tricks.”

Yamcha and Tien begin as antagonists—selfish, aggressive, power-driven—and slowly transform into honorable warriors who value integrity and friendship. And Roshi, flawed as he is, remains and properly fulfills his role as The Mentor: consistent, wise when it matters, and crucial in shaping the next generation.

There are no Super Saiyans here. No instant power-ups. Even the one true transformation we do see—Goku turning into the Great Ape—comes with disastrous consequences. Dragon Ball puts its faith in something far less flashy: tough, gritty training and experience earned through failure. You fall, you learn, you try again, that is the focus. And when you try again some more, effort slowly turns into growth. Even if you treat Goku as a special case, just look at Krillin. He may not win the tournaments, but he’s never far behind the one who does—and that alone says everything about what this series tries to convey.

Our Favorite Moments Along the Way

For me, revisiting Dragon Ball was a joy filled with rediscovery. Jackie Chun. Tien’s Tri-Beam. Climbing Korin’s Tower. Training with Korin and later Mr. Popo. The Piccolo fight and then the one against Piccolo Junior. Sometimes I was just as tense as my son—especially during moments like the underwater Red Ribbon Army base, realizing that I’d forgotten quite a few smaller arcs, which were a pleasure to relive.

Junior, meanwhile, was all in.
“This might be my favorite series,” he said more than once.
He loved the fights, especially the long, multi-episode ones. The cliffhanger endings kept him hooked. The comedy landed perfectly. He cheered for Goku to run faster, to arrive in time, to save the day.

Training arcs fascinated him, but tournaments were his highlight.
“Hmm… that’s when everything they learned actually matters,” he pondered.
Tien became his favorite character after Goku—cool, powerful, redeemed. His favorite saga was the final tournament, when Goku returned older, taller, stronger, and full of surprises.

He was also deeply impressed by the artwork.
“How did they draw this so well?”
“Who made it?”
That curiosity alone felt like a proper dad victory.

Why It Worked for Us

• A True Hero’s Journey: Goku’s path from innocence to maturity is clear, earned, and being an inspiration for our Real Life journey.

• Learning Through Hardship: Losses and failures are lessons and motivation that push characters to persevere and grow. Progress coming from effort, patience, and discipline, not from shortcuts.

• A World Worth Exploring: Constantly expanding environments kept curiosity alive episode after episode.

• Characters That Grow: Even rivals and villains are allowed to change, teaching lessons of empathy and integrity.

• Humor With Heart: Jokes and playful moments give the characters room to breathe, making their struggles and losses feel more real when things turn serious.

Final Thoughts

Dragon Ball ends exactly how it should. Goku, despite all his power, doesn’t win the World Martial Arts Tournament until the very end—and only after facing his greatest challenge yet. The final tournament feels like a culmination of everything learned along the way.

Because beneath the punches and fights, Dragon Ball is built on something far more lasting: friendship, integrity, perseverance, and the pursuit of becoming better than you were yesterday. And these values aren’t preached—they’re lived by our characters, and earned through loss, effort, and loyalty. They become the fuel that carries the characters through overwhelming odds, and the reason the journey feels meaningful long after all the challenges and tournaments are over.

There’s so much more to say about Dragon Ball—its influence, its legacy, what it started. But that’s a conversation for another time. This Geeky Dad Review has to end now… because Junior is already excited to record his own narrated lines.

What surprised me the most is that this happened in December, a month when I was no longer able to write regularly. I only shared a few Notes and spent time engaging with some truly awesome creators from the Substack Gaming Community.

Here, I want to extend my full appreciation and congratulations to , for creating such a wonderful Christmas-season with her 12 Plays of Game-mas initiative. It encouraged the entire community to share meaningful articles, support one another, and grow together. It was such a wholesome time!

As for 2025… I see it as a breakthrough year for me.

I’ve always been a creative person, but I never really found my place. What changed me was… Fatherhood! Along with some Divine Intervention, in the form of winning quite a few big giveaways, which helped me build my editing PC, and provided motivation to create tech reviews and more. So… once my son was born, something shifted. Even though I suddenly had much less time for my passions, I started learning video editing from scratch and began creating and uploading to YouTube.

Strangely enough, a second wave hit me in 2024… after my daughter was born. And I don’t doubt Gods guiding hand, as before… But this time, it was a mix of factors, like a heart yearning to create more than the occasional video, the hybrid work schedule, discovering Substack and more. The resulting idea finally materialized in May 2025, when I published my very first Gamer Dad Review:

It turned out to be an amazing year. I surprised myself by managing to publish 24 weekly articles. On top of that, I started recording narrations—involving Junior with his dialogue lines, and shaping the audio narrations with sound effects and music, to enhance each written piece. Somehow, I even found the energy to be active on YouTube, where I loved the project to archive an Elite Dangerous-inspired music album, paired with scenery from my journeys in the game. (Check it out if you’re in the mood for cool music and awesome space beauty)

What an incredible start.

December, unfortunately, was different. I wasn’t able to create much. My focus had to shift to family health emergencies, followed by the packed holiday season… and in the middle of all that, I was also let go from my corporate job. 😞

As for 2026… My goal is to take a few months—write articles, convert some into YouTube videos, rekindling old ideas, and starting new projects around our shared love for games.

But before all that… let’s pause.
Let’s take a day and simply read.

I enjoyed Amy’s 12 Days so much that below you’ll find 6 more recommended Creators and Articles I hadn’t had the chance to highlight yet:

1. - Covering a Total Conversion MOD for Fallout 4, transforming it into Fallout: London, developed by a group of volunteer modders. Here’s the Link and a Snippet:

   I understand that retro-futuristic Americana is a core part of the franchise, but Fallout London has expertly demonstrated that an international Fallout game works very very well. It still feels like Fallout, but it unlocks a whole new cornucopia of cultural references and a fresh perspective on The Great War.

2. - His own favorite article of 2025 was about Yasuke Simulator, it’s historical importance and cultural significance, which should be taken with the utmost seriousness, importance & gravity. Here’s the Link and a Snippet:

   The game really makes you feel like Yasuke. The game centers real ethnic minorities by casting them exclusively as authentic voice actors - though a little unpolished, the voice acting is authentic, and authentically portrays the historical period and place, which is foreign where they don’t speak English good.

3. - A “Late” Review on Fez. A game I remember since release, but never played. Focusing on perspective switching by using 3D in a 2D environment, quite interesting. Here’s the Link and a Snippet:

   What if you could see the world from a whole new perspective? Not just something you hadn’t noticed before, but an entirely new physical point of view? That’s what happens to Gomez, the playable character in the 2012 game Fez, who dons a rather jaunty fez after witnessing the breakup of his known universe to reveal something mind-bending.

4. - A proper analysis on one of my favorite games, Knight of the Old Republic, which opened up my love for the Star Wars Universe. Here’s the Link and a Snippet:

   The philosophical movement of history is, I think, the most profound theme of the entire Star Wars Legends continuity. In this pre-Disney version of the saga, Star Wars spans thousands upon thousands of years. It is not just the story of one family. It is a story about the titanic clash of spiritual and political forces. These forces are not driven purely by material concerns, like economics. They are driven by ideas. Hence, history in Star Wars is moved by philosophy.

5. - Another in depth trip into a cornerstone game, Fallout, which grew my love for proper world-building and storylines in games. Here’s the Link and a Snippet:

   …you’re dispatched from Vault 13, and the main storyline progresses when you bring a water chip back home. Everything that happens in between those two events is a direct consequence of your decision-making. […] But no matter what you do, you’ll develop a reputation among the wasteland’s inhabitants, and the game will react to your decisions to an extent that was practically unheard of before 1997.

6. - An interesting discussion on difficulty and tutorials, skill and learning, and more. Here’s the Link and a Snippet:

   You don’t need to worry about how you measure up against other players, just play more games more often and you’ll get there. […] One day, you might find a game that’s brutally difficult that you love and you’ll feel that motivation to improve and fight your way through it,…

Hello everyone! I’m ROP, your resident Gamer Dad, and this time I decided to take Junior on a trip to my roots. I mean… my deep, deep gaming roots. I wanted to show him one of the first games I ever played as a kid, back when PCs had dial-up internet, floppy disks were the USBs of that time, when monitors were heavier than small cars, 😆 and saving your progress required… well, pen&paper. 😁 The game, that defined my early gaming years, was: Dyna Blaster.

At first, Junior stared at the title screen like he was meeting a long-lost ancestor.
“Dad… this is what games looked like when you were little?”
“Yup.”
“…they’re actually kinda cute.”
And just like that, we stepped into the tiny maze-based chaos machine.

A Bomb filled Campaign

Dyna Blaster introduces you to this world through a short cinematic, where the black evil Bomberman kidnaps Lisa, the daughter of Dr. Mitsumori (this is a 1990 Japanese game, after all). So… with the mission on-hand, you’re dropped into a base grid of randomly generated blocks and enemies, armed with nothing but… well… bombs.

Junior adapted to that simplicity instantly. He loved placing them, then running for safety in that tiny moment of suspense, before the flames burst across the grid. There’s something timeless about that micro-tension or... at least until you get the timing and get used to the power of your bomb, how long your flame reaches. He enjoyed it all: the timing, the position puzzles, the panic when he would accidentally trap himself between a wall and his bomb… “Wait—oh nooo… why did I put the bomb there?!” A second later: BOOM and we laughed. It was déjà vu for me, as I made that same mistake so many many times when I was his age.

As levels went on and new, trickier enemies got introduced, he began playing more thoughtfully, predicting movement patterns and carefully threading his way through tight corridors. He loved the feeling of outsmarting a monster, especially that real fast bear, but also even the monster that was just a little animated blob with ambition.

16-bit Graphics Charm

One surprise was how quickly the retro aesthetic won him over. Dyna Blaster’s visuals are clean, colorful, and with a focus put on charm and expression. Junior liked the art style here more than some more modern games with retro aesthetics, like Disney’s Hercules, the PC game we played and reviewed earlier.

He kept pointing out how “cute” everything looked: the walls, the power-ups, the little enemies—each a tiny threat with personality, and when they died, they’d balloon up in the cutest way… well, until they would explode and disappear.

There’s a clarity to Dyna Blaster that makes everything easy to follow, and I think this simplicity helped him stay immersed and learn to play.

And then, I got my moment to shine… I pulled out my old notebook again—having there all the stage passwords, scribbled from back when.

“Wait… you have all the passwords… in that old notebook? Yohoo!”
Suddenly, skipping ahead after a tough death was a small ritual from a past era, shared between two generations of gamers.

A Journey Through Eight Worlds

We mostly played the single-player campaign, which is exactly how I grew up with Dyna Blaster—round after round, each one with its own theme, new enemies, and a boss fight waiting at the end. Junior immediately loved the sense of progression.

Every time we cleared a map, he’d lean closer as if the next maze might reveal something completely unexpected. Power-ups quickly became one of his favorite parts: longer flames, extra bombs, speed boosts, the glorious ability to walk through walls… “Dad, look! I’m a ghost now!” he said while phasing through bricks with absolute delight. Watching him light up with each upgrade brought back the exact excitement I felt as a kid.

The boss battles were a highlight too. He took them on with surprising patience, figuring out his patterns and weaving around explosions like a tiny strategist in training.

The journey across its eight worlds is meant to be played solo, so… even thou multiplayer is implemented in the competitive Battle Mode, there is no co-op, which made Junior a bit sad. Yet, the game’s rhythm still worked wonderfully for us. If anything, that limitation planted a new seed: he’s already waiting for our future session where we will dive into Battle Mode and try to blow each other up in friendly Dad versus Junior fashion.

Why It Worked for Us

• Short but Engaging Levels: Levels are small enough to keep you progressing, yet filled with enough walls and monsters, to keep you challenged.

• Boss Battles & Map Themes: The themed worlds kept Junior intrigued about what came next, and the boss fights at the end of every zone felt like a well-earned challenge & reward.

• Retro Charm That Still Works: Junior isn’t a fan of old-school pixelated graphics, but it surprised me how much he loved the bright, expressive feel of Dyna Blaster—reminding me how good design can outshine age.

• Good Learning Curve: The gradual shift from basic mechanics to faster and trickier enemies, to powerful chained explosions gave Junior a steady sense of growth and mastery.

Father Thoughts

Revisiting Dyna Blaster with Junior felt like opening a door to a different era in gaming, but also a different era for myself. These old, retro titles hold so many memories of who you were back then and sharing them feels like passing down a small piece of who you were growing up. Watching Junior enjoy Dyna Blaster, and seeing him hooked as me—the excitement, the laughter, the problem-solving, the patience… and yes, the occasional self-destruction… felt like bridging worlds. It’s yet another reminder that fun, at its core, doesn’t need cutting-edge graphics or sprawling narratives. Sometimes, all it needs is a good idea, simple mechanics, clever design, and a handful of bombs that explode exactly when you expect them to.

Whether you’re sharing games with family or just exploring the past on your own, Dyna Blaster shows that a well-crafted game can outlast trends and generations… some sparks, just keep burning.

Hello everybody! So, last month I hit my 4th decade on this Earth, Junior hit his first, and my little Jewel doubled her age too. 😆 A full-on month for us! Now that it’s passed, I’m feeling a bit nostalgic—looking back at times past, at the things that shaped me.

One of those things I look back to most fondly is my love of nature. Hiking mountain trails, pitching a tent on a windy ridge, camping on a mountaintop where the clouds sit with us, taking in those vast panoramas that make you feel both tiny and infinite at the same time, and breathing that crisp air that feels like medicine for the soul.

There’s something sacred about a mountain view. I’ve always chased them in real life… and I realize that, surprisingly often, I do the same in video games.

Skyrim 🏔 My Quarantine Escape

The first time I actually noticed, was when the world closed down during COVID quarantine. I’m not one that needs much social contact, but what I found I missed is… nature. City walls felt like cages and nature seemed to be something I could only remember… so, it was like Skyrim became my virtual mountain refuge.

Climbing snowy peaks, hearing the wind howl over the tundra, finding a hidden campfire under the stars or a cozy shack, in which to spend the night. I remember seeing all the scenery Skyrim has to offer through fresh new eyes… absorbing it all in. It felt more than escaping into a game. It was therapy. Skyrim… became my window into the wild again.

The Long Dark ❄️ Knee-Deep in Memories

After realizing this, I also started seeing the winter season with different eyes. Winter Holidays are a time when it’s customary to go back to the roots… carols, traditional cakes, typical adornments, even old games to replay.

Here, there’s The Long Dark. A game that brings me back to winters of my youth, in cantonments up in the Carpathians, where I’d trudge through knee-deep snow on narrow forest trails, with the air so sharp every breath felt alive. The Long Dark captures that same mix of awe and solitude—a reminder that nature can humble you, and yet… it also offers moments of peace. Like on a rare clear day, stopping in your tracks to admire the slight snowfall and the calm breeze, or hearing the crunch of boots on the icy snow, or even sitting next to the flicker of firelight in a warm cabin while a blizzard roars outside… all these creating So Much Coziness. It’s one of the best winter games ever made.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons 👬 Panoramic Benches

How could I not bring this game up? Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is one where I found that same mountain-born feeling—but this time, with Junior by my side. We even made a full Gamer Dad Review about it, here’s a snippet:

The Crew 🚗 Road Trips with Junior

Another page of this experience is how my digital hikes turned into digital road trips. The Crew 2 became a father-son world exploration game; even if it was just the USA, the map was HUGE. We’d take scenic mountain rally routes, race along forest trails, and explore long, winding roads that felt both freeing and intimate.

Junior mostly loved the thrill—the speed, the jumps, the dust. And I, the views—the peaks in the distance, the sunlight breaking through the forest canopy… But together, we found a balance and a rhythm… stopping at fuel stations, at burger shops, at cabana resorts… playfully role-playing, making these feel like real journeys, just without leaving home.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 🚛 The Road Less Traveled

Yes, it’s a driving sim. But ETS2 is also one of the most relaxing ways to experience digital landscapes, and one of my go-to comfort games.

I love taking the longer roads for my deliveries, especially those winding mountain ones—windows down, engine humming, and no music in the background. There’s something deeply relaxing about cruising through virtual versions of real places, admiring the way light hits the cliffs of a mountain or how panoramic views open up after a corner, or just admiring small mountain towns with cozy houses. Sometimes I even stop at the designated viewpoints to take photos, because yes, the game actually rewards you for sightseeing. It’s like a digital road trip—slow, scenic, and strangely grounding after a long day.

Growing Up with a Passion for Views

Looking even further back, I see that this love and habit didn’t start with modern games. Even as a kid, I was the type to climb virtual mountains just to admire the view.

In Gothic, I’d find a high cliff and just… sit there admiring the view (well, stand there, as the early 2000s weren’t big on sitting animations). 😋 In Morrowind, I was stunned by the sky dome and how alive the world felt. Even Serious Sam 1&2 (despite being a pure chaos of a game) gave me those massive, fog-free maps where you could see forever. Sacrifice and Giants: Citizen Kabuto had lush, green worlds that sparked my imagination, and World of Warcraft gave me sunsets I still remember.

Maybe… hopefully… this is what I’m really passing on to Junior—the habit of slowing down and appreciating the views, or, more precisely, the small wonders of the worlds we play and explore. After all… it’s all about the journey, right?!

Why It Matters

Because, whether I’m facing just gaming challenges or real-life trials, these moments remind me to stop rushing. To pause. To breathe. To think deeply.

Games might be made to entertain—but it’s up to us to learn to see their depth, and realize that games give us a lot more… lessons for life, challenges to train our skills, new perspectives; they even give us space to feel, experiment, and experience.

So, my habit will endure. Every time I’ll find a virtual mountaintop, I’ll be standing at the edge of a world, smiling quietly, letting the view wash over me while appreciating the little things.

October brings the season of horror, but for me, not all horror comes in the from of monsters or ghosts. Some of it lives in memory, in echoes of a lived past. This Halloween, I wanted to revisit one of the most personal entries from my list of indie chills: Black the Fall.

…a title that focuses on atmosphere and history itself, rather than commercial jump scares.

Made by Sand Sailor Studio, a small Romanian team, Black the Fall is a dystopian puzzle platformer, inspired a lot by Inside and Abe’s Odyssey. It uses the same framework, but… it is also made to be a living memory of the communist era—the world I was born into. And revisiting it now, years later, felt less like playing a game and more like walking through a museum of our collective trauma, remembering where each piece fell.

Under the Weight of Iron Rule

Black the Fall opens with a man working tirelessly at a bike-powered machine. He’s faceless, voiceless, just another cog in a system that feeds on exhaustion. There’s no introduction, no dialogue—just the clangs of hammer strikes and the hum of a living industrial graveyard.

But, as these things start... our worker can no longer take it and decides to exploit a flaw in the system to escape. Slipping away from the endless production line, he steps into a world of surveillance, control and cruelty. Massive factory halls echo with the hiss of steam and the rhythm of machinery pounding without purpose, rooms destined to brain-washing, and outside… the grey sky seems to press down, heavy with ash and resignation. Concrete towers rise like monuments to obedience, while loudspeakers bark orders to… no one in particular.

At one point, I stopped playing just to stare at a huge screen projecting the mandatory propaganda… images of the dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu. I realized that what terrified me wasn’t the screen itself, but the familiarity I had of it.

Echoes of Control

Mechanically, Black the Fall is about manipulation: of machines, of light, and sometimes, of people. You start by pulling levers and pushing platforms, but soon you acquire a laser pointer that can control other workers and later even a mechanical companion, a small robot dog (which I named Rufus, due to it’s rough animation, but full of dog personality).

Each puzzle feels like a commentary on obedience and ingenuity—you have to use the tools of the system, and its flaws, to escape the system… this is how such regimes often crumble from within, right? Their corruption, their blind self-interest, becomes the very weakness that lets others slip through the cracks. So, in Black the Fall, the brilliance is in how every element serves both function and metaphor.

Sound also enhances the game as a whole, being a good chunk of its downtrodden atmosphere. One moment in particular stands out, where you find yourself in complete darkness and you have to make your way forward, avoiding death purely by listening for the dangers facing you. This makes inventive use of binaural audio, even recommending the use of headphones through an in-game poster. I loved how the developers played with the sound throughout the game, being one of its better parts… right alongside the light-and-shadow play.

The Romanian Heart Beneath it All

The play between light, shadow, and the world’s haze gives depth to Black the Fall’s atmosphere. A color desaturated world, broken only by harsh, invasive reds, evokes a kind of industrialized Sin City look—cold and functional, to the detriment of those living within.

And talking about those that live within… or lived within the 1980s, who grew up in Romania or Eastern Europe… there’s something hauntingly intimate about Black the Fall. The architecture, the propaganda, the workers lined up under red banners. You can almost smell the oil and hear the echo of the factory whistle that marked the start and end of each day… like one of those workers could’ve been my father who, back then, worked in a nail factory.

I also loved the way the developers wove actual Romanian language into the world. To many players it might sound like some indistinct Eastern Bloc chatter… but for me, every phrase hit home. The muffled orders of guards, a propaganda broadcast echoing from a TV, a desperate voice behind a barricaded door… they all added a layer of authenticity that went beyond visuals.

After all, Black the Fall was made by a Bucharest-based Studio, and you can feel that personal connection in every level. The Soviet iconography, the CRT-TVs, the occasional ruin of a chapel or a park, inspired by the real ones—it all points directly to the reality of the communist era, not to the fictional dystopia presented. Even with its elements of fantasy—CCTV eyes everywhere, mech enforcers, and bloated guards with AR helmets on—the truth behind it all remains unmistakable. This wasn’t only inspired by Romania’s past; it was shaped by it.

The Fall

As I progressed through the game, after about three hours of climbing, crawling, and surviving, I finally reached what seemed to be the final stretch—the moment of escape. Or so I thought. The truth is, this journey toward liberation, this struggle of a single worker trying to break free, was a selfish odyssey. You cannot escape this kind of regime alone. But when thousands of such individual stories, all yearning for freedom, converge—something far greater happens. Evil is confronted. That was the only real way to escape, and it’s exactly what we, the Romanian people, did in 1989.

So instead of drifting into fantasy or sci-fi abstraction, Black the Fall grounded its ending bringing it closer to home… and… it moved me to tears. The developers chose to re-enact the events of the 1989 Revolution and, what struck me most, is that this moment mirrored a real piece of footage from the revolution, something you can still find in the old Romanian documentaries. Seeing it reborn here, within the game’s dystopian framework, was immensely touching.

The ending is one of the most meaningful I’ve ever played. It might be universally grand in it’s meaning, but for me… it’s also deeply personal. Even though I was only five at the time, I grew up surrounded by stories of that December. My family still keeps the memories close and even had a few stray bullets that hit their windows, kept as reminders. That memory, that trauma, has always been part of our collective identity. So… Black the Fall didn’t just recreate that fight; it perfectly captured the moment when the peoples enduring silence finally broke.

As the cheers of liberation consumed the last remnants of the regime on screen, I felt something I didn’t expect: gratitude. Gratitude that this small team chose to immortalize that moment, to remind us that freedom wasn’t given—it was taken, through struggle, through loss, through courage. Once the game ends, instead of the normal credits, you are brought in a museum zone… the devs showing you actual pictures from the Revolution, but also ending on one from a more recent time: the 2017 #REZIST Protest, where people successfully blocked a law from passing, that would’ve legalized corruption.
I could not believe it. In that moment, I just took off my headphones, and just sat there.

Silent. Hopeful. Proud.

• A historic story told through a what if scenario: Black the Fall doesn’t sanitize the past—it confronts it, and it let’s it be inspiration, to a point of conversion into a playable memorial from a generation that lived it, to those who never will.

• Oppression made tangible: The antagonist is the world itself… or rather the system that imprisoned it. The game show’s the oppressive control and it makes you feel it.

• A Cultural memory preserved in digital art: Every scene feels like a fragment of Romania’s past—from the concrete jungles of decaying apartment blocks to the endless industrial pipes and smoke-choked skies. Amid the factories and ruins, there’s also haunting familiarity: the empty playground echoing Orășelul Copiilor aka The Kids City Park, a crumbling church where a few figures still gather in faith. It’s a world that remembers what we once built, and what we lost.

• It reminded me who we were, where we were… and how far we’ve come.

Final Thoughts

Black the Fall is not a perfect game. It could’ve used a bit more polish in different aspects, like animations, platform visibility and some sound effects. But these aspects do not count so much for me, as the whole atmosphere of the game, its message and its cultural importance is what drives it.

Games like Black the Fall remind us that this medium can do far more than entertain. It can document, interpret, and reawaken parts of history that risk fading from memory. Political and cultural themes, when treated with sincerity, become bridges between generations—teaching where and when textbooks fail. Few forms of art let us live a historical experience, feel its weight, and reflect on its impact in our present world.

And while I’ve played countless horror games, none have haunted me quite like this one—because its terror isn’t fictional. It lingers, echoing the ghosts of our history and the resilience of those who refused to kneel.

Explaining the game to Junior didn’t quite land—he kept a skeptical attitude, thinking unlocking doors sounded lame and boring, especially after our high-speed thrills like Race the Sun. But once we started the first level, his eyes lit up at the Monsters, Inc.-style doors on a themed floating diorama, revealing a miniaturized world of hidden-object and escape room-style puzzles. “So many doors, can we solve them all?” he proceeded to ask, poking at the next diorama, now hooked on the peaceful and tactile challenge of unlocking each unique door in a father-son adventure of wits and tiny doors.

Little Doors in Little Worlds

Each door in Doors: Paradox is its own little world. Some are just barn doors, others steampunk labs… they vary from ancient tombs to ethereal trippy dreams. You spin, zoom, poke at everything, combine objects, tweak dials, finding how tiny parts connect to one another—water filling a jug to trigger a trap, gears turning to reveal hidden panels, or cannons firing to clear a path.

No two puzzles are quite the same. You might align glowing symbols one moment and move marbles through a pyramid maze the next. And while the challenges are not punishing, they’re designed with just enough friction to make you have that perfect “aha!” feeling. And for a young mind, this was one of the best parts, each time hearing Junior: “Aaaaah! Now I get it!“ . I knew I picked the perfect game!

The variety kept things fresh, but the presentation is what kept us going. The visuals are like a miniature hobbyist dream—vibrant and full of details, yet never overwhelming and with the right elements popping out. The sound design, too, is wonderful: from moody soundscapes to relaxing music, with satisfying clicks and jingles, all creating a zen vibe almost. So, I think the developers have done a brilliant job in bringing their imagination to life.

The Joy of Figuring It Out

We approached Doors: Paradox like a father-son puzzle project. I’d start by explaining a few clues, showing how patterns and objects connect, but soon Junior started piecing them together himself. “Don’t tell me, Dad—I got this one!” he said at one point, frowning in total concentration.

And he did get it. Watching him move from needing hints to confidently solving entire levels on his own was one of those proud parent moments—the kind you don’t expect from a video game about doors.

By the later stages, he even suggested a new challenge: timed competitions. Each of us would take turns solving a fresh door as fast as possible. I never would’ve thought of that… to take a puzzle game and convert it into a competitive turn-based multiplayer match xD… but there we were—cheering, solving, and challenging each other.

A Story so Bare, it’s barely There

The story, told through written messages, is lacking—a cat guiding you, a mysterious traveler in a journey between dimensions, leaving behind more questions than answers. “What’s with the cat?” Junior wondered, looking for clues in other scrolls. Unfortunately, these led to more questions that remained largely unanswered. So… I’d conclude that the story is relatively non-existent, as we stopped following it after about 10-15 doors.

But returning to the better, with short 10–15 minute sessions, it a perfect game for after school small breaks, evenings, and timed competitions. Collectibles (scrolls & gems) can add replay value, but the lack of a deeper narrative left us wanting in this department.

Why It Worked for Us

• Cozy Puzzles: The soothing soundtrack and charming visuals made each session feel like winding down together rather than getting fired up.

• Diorama Delight: The diorama-style doors felt like our miniature painting sessions come to life, but instead of tiny characters we have… doors. :)

• Learning Through Logic: Watching Junior learn the tricks of the “puzzle“ trade and the newly found problem-solving joy, made me genuinely proud.

• Bite-Sized Bonding: Short sessions fit our busy weeks, letting Junior and I dive in without stress, and without big commitments.

Father Thoughts

For me, Doors: Paradox sits in that cozy middle ground between game and meditation. It invites curiosity, encourages observation, and rewards persistence and experimentation—perfect traits to nurture the mind of a young gamer.

The game’s short levels and clear feedback makes it easy for kids to engage without frustration, while its polished presentation and sense of discovery keep adults hooked too. While playing with my son, escaping through the door was just part of the reward… the main one consisted of opening new doors and perspectives together.

…a minimalist, high-speed flying game by FlippFly Studios—made by just two brothers. What began as a “let’s try a quick arcade game” became a daily ritual of chasing perfection… or at least, chasing the Sun.

Flying on Sunlight

There’s no finish line here, only the race against time and the setting Sun. You pilot a solar-powered bird-like-craft through a surreal landscape of sharp geometry, and your only fuel is light itself. Junior was instantly fascinated by that idea—“So you’re not racing others, you’re racing the setting sun?!” he asked, eyes wide. 🌞 Exactly! Stay in the light, go fast, and don’t crash — because once the Sun disappears, so do you.

What makes Race the Sun special is its simplicity—both in concept and execution. Every run is a balance between daring and discipline. Find risky routes for speed boosts, zip between falling pillars, hit green jump boosts to avoid obstacles, and pray you don’t clip a wall.

It’s endlessly replayable not because of its size, but because the map resets daily. Each day brings a new world to master, with a fresh leaderboard and new routes to discover. It’s like a daily dose of zen chaos: part meditation, part adrenaline rush.

Minimal Light Speed

The visuals are simple but stunning. Sharp shapes, stark shadows, a palette that glows and darkens with intensity. It’s a world stripped down to essentials, yet filled with elegance. The sound design complements that perfectly: calm, chill music paired with the rushing sounds when you pass near objects, or as you scrape between structures at breakneck speeds.

Progression comes through small goals—three active challenges at any given time. Completing them levels up your craft, unlocking slots and new powers to equip, and even some wing decal options. Equip a magnet to grab points and boosters easier, batteries so that shadows don’t slow you down, or turning jets for tighter control. It’s simple, satisfying, and rewards persistence more than perfection.

Even the portals, rare moments of reward, add a spark of wonder to each run. Some whisk you away to shimmering bonus realms overflowing with points, others skip you straight to the next zone in a blink. Junior absolutely loved them. Each time he spotted one, he’d shout “Portal!” and dive straight in, grinning as the world dissolved to warp him into a new one filled with easy wins. To him, those fleeting detours felt like magic—a well-earned breather in a world built to humble you.

The Lessons of Repetition

It is a roguelite game, so you’ll die. A lot. But in Race the Sun, that’s part of the learning process. Every crash teaches timing, patience, and awareness. And honestly, it’s a wonderful way for kids to learn these lessons, without the frustration of a tense game.

Junior loved the sensation of speed the most—that giddy feeling of flying just above the ground, dodging obstacles by a hair. But his favorite move? Well… using three or more jumps in quick succession to rocket above the clouds. “Weeee! I’m flying above the birds!“ I hadn’t even thought of that! Leave it to him to find new ways to fly the craft.

He also took to the daily resets in stride. Each map taught him to adapt, to find the best route, build a plan, and then execute it. Building patience and pattern recognition… but Race the Sun’s speed element also trains focus and reaction—all skills that will surely touch his real life.

Why It Worked for Us

• Miniature Exploration: The daily-reset maps gave us the feeling of discovering a new world each day. He’d call out “Booster there!” or noting the main obstacles to avoid, as if we were explorers charting a digital landscape.

• Minimalist Beauty: Calming visuals and music balanced the ride intensity perfectly.

• Fast, Simple Fun: Immediate to learn, easy to restart and try again, yet… endlessly challenging.

• Life Lessons: Junior quickly learned that failure wasn’t punishment, it was feedback. Failing often became less about frustration and more about mastery.

• Adapt and Overcome: Watching him learn each map, plan routes, and spot patterns made me proud — patience, focus, and persistence all born from play.

Father Thoughts

For me, Race the Sun hit that sweet spot of meditative focus and thrilling reflexes. Shifting the focus from winning, to improving. Transforming repetition from a grind, to a rhythm. 😎 And sharing that rhythm with Junior turned what could have been a solo experience, into a shared lesson in persistence and discovery.

We both reached the max level, 25, unlocked everything, and called it a finished game. Satisfied, not burnt out. This game doesn’t ask for endless hours. It’s thankful with your attention, reflexes, and your willingness to try again. And that’s a game worth passing down.

So, whether you’re a gamer dad looking for a quick play session with your kid or just someone chasing the horizon—Race the Sun is simple on the surface, but beneath the light, it teaches focus, persistence, and the joy of the journey, balancing speed and serenity so perfectly that it leaves you smiling, as the world fades to dusk. 🌤️

Hello Everybody! October is here — the air started to smells of wet fallen leaves and pumpkin spice, nights are growing longer, and gamers everywhere start hunting for that perfect spooky experience. For many, Halloween means to turn on the latest horror blockbusters for a… commercial Halloween experience, full of jump scares, gore, and cinematic terror.

But that’s not really my style.

I’ve always preferred games, and those that unsettle rather than shock, that creep under your skin rather than scream in your face. Games that focus on mood, mystery, isolation, and the psychological — experiences that linger in your thoughts long after you’ve turned off the screen.

So here’s my own Halloween list — where I lean toward atmospheric indies or often forgotten gems that offer a unique twist… the kind that would make for a cool story near a campfire, when the night grows dark.

1. Limbo & Inside

These iconic indie titles from Playdead are renowned for a reason, blending an intense and bleak atmosphere with a constant sense of unease. The visuals focus a lot on the contrasting play between light and shadow, with many surprises, delivering a gripping experience without relying on jump scares. It’s dark, narrative-driven, with minimalist design and haunting vibes. Ideal for any gamer seeking a thoughtful, immersive Halloween night.

2. Black the Fall

Drawing inspiration from Inside, this indie game shifts the focus to world-building and drops you into an oppressive atmosphere rooted in a totalitarian regime. This is close to my heart as it explores a dystopian future where the Romanian Communist Party was never defeated. Its atmosphere is heavy, built not from monsters but from history itself, with nods to real events and real places that enhance the immersion, offering a unique, unsettling journey perfect for a reflective Halloween dive, especially if you want to discover a bit of Romania.

3. The Swapper

What if someone knew your mind better than you did?
Sometimes… Horror is about ideas. Set in a haunting sci-fi landscape, The Swapper weaves a philosophical plotline told through the game’s environment using narrative design and narrative driven puzzles. The standout clone-based mechanic, adds a fresh twist, immersing you in a lonely and deep atmosphere. The isolation of space, the eerie silence, and the questions the game raises about identity… makes this a perfect Halloween pick for thinkers.

4. Lone Survivor

Don’t let the pixel art fool you—Lone Survivor is terrifying. The masked protagonist must escape a disease-ravaged city, questioning what’s real as he starves and exhausts himself. With minimal visuals and sound, it crafts an intense, psychological descent into paranoia and survival—sneak silently or fight, eat what you find or use drugs, care for your mind or spiral into madness. The stark visuals creating a chilling experience that defies expectations, proving you don’t need cutting-edge graphics to make your heart race. Making it an excellent pick for those seeking a raw, atmospheric Halloween thrill.

5. The Cat Lady

This is psychological horror turned up to eleven. The Cat Lady is more than unsettling — it’s deeply disturbing, blending paranormal elements with raw, emotional storytelling. You follow Susan Ashworth, a lonely 40-year-old on the brink of suicide, whose life is upended by five strangers that pull her into a nightmarish journey between the world of the living and the dead. It explores depression, isolation, and trauma through uncomfortable imagery and some grotesque scenarios. It’s not an easy game to play, but that’s exactly why it creates an unforgettable, mind-bending Halloween session.

6. Bulb Boy

It starts cute… and stays cute… but something is very wrong. Bulb Boy unveils a horrifying underbelly that’s oddly charming, twisting lighthearted visuals into something gross, weird, and deeply unsettling. This 2D point-and-click horror adventure follows a boy with a glowing bulb head, unraveling a twisted tale—to save his family, like Grandpa-raffin and Mothdog, from a frightening darkness. It’s proof that horror can wear many faces—even an adorable one. It still leave you squirming, offering a delightful yet unsettling ride, ideal for those who enjoy Halloween twists and surprises in delightful packages.

7. Bendy and the Ink Machine

Take the cheerful wonder of old-school cartoons… and turn it against you. Bendy and the Ink Machine blends nostalgia with nightmare as you step into the abandoned Joey Drew Studios — a once-bright animation workshop, now hiding dark secrets behind a labyrinth of ink-stained walls. Twisted creations roam its halls, familiar smiles hide sinister intent, and every shadow feels alive. The atmosphere is suffocating, the jump scares are sharp, and after this, you’ll never look at classic animation the same way again, making it a perfect Halloween pick for fans of unique, unsettling horror.

BONUS: Sanitarium

A timeless classic gem from 1998, Sanitarium is a point-and-click psychological horror masterpiece. Set in a world where a very thin line separates senses from madness. You awaken as a patient in an asylum, after a car crash, only to find yourself wandering through surreal worlds born of insanity — deformed children, ancient gods, reflections of your own past or impossible alternate realities. The puzzles and riddles will make your head spin and make you wonder what is really real. Fear might not be a focus here, but deep unease is, and it’s a must-play for fans of story-driven horror.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it — my personal picks for Halloween gaming. They’re not the loudest or the bloodiest, but each one has a way of crawling into your thoughts and staying there, reminding us that the season is about more than frights—it’s a time to connect with stories that linger. Whether they unsettle you with mood, challenge you with ideas, or make you question reality itself, they’re the kind of experiences I think this spooky season is all about.

Hello everybody! Any of you having a hard or stressful week? Well, I am, so I felt the need to get the load off through a game. If I usually go for a cozy adventure or a whimsical indie game…well, this time I needed something more… maybe one that builds adrenaline, pumps you up and then helps you release the tension. So how about a brutal trip into sound, speed, and surreal horror? I’ve picked up, a second time: Thumper.

A game that the devs describe as “rhythm-violence,” and I can confirm that this strange description fits perfectly.

Developed by the tiny two-person studio Drool—Mark Flurry (on programming) and Brian Gibson (art and music)—Thumper is a masterclass in how much atmosphere and tension can be conjured with minimal tools. It’s strange, it’s hard, it’s overwhelming—and I loved it.

A Rhythm Game Like No Other

When you start the game, you are presented with a peaceful menu, with an inverted pyramid… a false sense, a fake feeling that you are about to embark on a sci-fi Journey-like music experience, but turned on its head. And how true is this!… Relaxing? How about oppressing. Harmonious? Better yet, discordant. Serene? Never!

Being a rhythm game, if you’re picturing Guitar Hero or AudioSurf, you’re only halfway there. Yes, Thumper is about hitting notes to the beat. But here, the “track” is a shiny, twisting road stretching into the dark abstract void, where everything is alien. You are alien. You play as a metallic space beetle, just a bug, an ant in this game’s world, hurtling toward overwhelming odds, toward cruel bosses made of nightmarish geometry.

It’s hypnotic, trippy, intense... Imagine the Pink Floyd’s Money album cover mashed with a sci-fi fever dream, with Lovecraftian undertones, and strapped to a rollercoaster that never stops accelerating. The visuals pulse and distort, the lights flare and collapse, and the music isn’t so much a song as it is a strange barrage of pounding industrial drums and unsettling tones, more like an asymmetrical song.

This isn’t just about playing music. It’s about surviving it.

Designed to Break You, but Built to Hook You

Thumper overwhelms you in every possible way. Levels are long—30 minutes or more—and require near-constant focus. The game wants to tire you, to make you slip up. With only two hits allowed before death, mistakes are costly. Thumper assaults you with off-beats, with tempo shifts, sudden track changes, speed increases and decelerations.

And yet… it’s fair. The controls are deceptively simple (arrows and the spacebar), checkpoints are frequent, with a few calm moments per level, to let you draw your breath… and every failure feels like a lesson learned. Mastery is rewarded: just surviving is possible, but unsatisfying and hollow. So you’ll want to hit every beat, nail every turn, and slam through every obstacle—not just to score higher, but because it makes the oppressive soundtrack resolve into something complete, something musical.

The sound design is what ties everything together: the heavy, almost depressing soundscape in the background, the heavy thumps, and the sharp feedback tones don’t just accompany your actions—they become the melody. By following the rhythm, you’re building it by hitting beats on time, recognizing tempo shifts, and riding the track as it twists against you. The real satisfaction comes when every input clicks, when your actions create the full, pounding song. Miss a few beats, and the game barely calls you out; it just leaves gaps in the music, forcing you to notice the absence. But make a big mistake, the kind that costs you a life, and the feedback is jarringly loud and unmistakable—clear enough to teach you not to repeat it. It’s a carefully tuned balance of the subtle and severe that makes you want to push harder, and not give up.

Horror Wrapped in Rhythm

One of the most surprising parts of Thumper is its horror flavor. The bosses—floating polygonal monstrosities and, most memorably, the giant screaming heads—fell straight out of The Lawnmower Man (a movie which terrified me as a kid). The whole experience is alien, psychedelic, and nightmarish in a way that rhythm games… well, never are.

But it’s not horror for horror’s sake—it’s atmosphere. The oppressive visuals, the relentless percussion, the sensation of being hunted by sound itself… it all blends into a unique experience that’s as much about mood as it is about mechanics.

Like DarkSouls, Thumber will do its best to impede your progress and it is tiresome. But I found another similarity. There is a semblance of a story… not told, but showed through level progression and most notably, through it’s ending. I will not spoil it, but I’ve found it so much more satisfying than many games with actual stories and good endings. This goes beyond!

Why It Mattered

• Pure Focus: Few games demand such intensity. It was refreshing to play something so overwhelming, so exhausting, yet so cathartic.

• Minimalism Done Right: Five buttons with endless complexity. Simple, easy to learn and hard to master.

• Atmosphere Overload: Lights, sound, and speed combine into a sensory storm that will take you on a unique ride.

• Balance of Pain & Reward: Long levels, but generous checkpoints. Brutal deaths, but immense satisfaction.

• Horror in Rhythm: A rhythm game that made me feel unsettled and at the same time mesmerized—that’s rare.

Final Thoughts

Thumper is a game of extremes. It isn’t meant to be relaxing. It isn’t meant to be easy. It isn’t even meant to be “finished” in the traditional sense, more likely beaten in the literal sense. This is the Dark Souls of rhythm games: brutal, unforgiving, but also deeply rewarding once you find the groove.

I don’t recommend it for young kids—it’s too intense, too eerie—but for solo players looking for something raw, unique, and cathartic, it’s absolutely worth your time, and the modest price. I know I’ll be returning again, not just to survive, but to chase more of those perfect runs, translating into awesome melodies.

What they managed to achieve back then is impressive: a wingsuit arcade experience that trades complexity for pure sensation—speed, crashes, and soaring through blocky but beautiful landscapes. This game is Superflight.

Beyond the game itself, I do appreciate the devs and their sense of humor. On the game’s Steam page, they even gave a list of what this game doesn’t have:

Yeah… instead, they offered something simple: for the price of a coffee - 3 bucks - you get intense speed, high-adrenaline near-misses, and worlds to explore. And honestly? They delivered exactly that.

Short Flights with Thrilling Smiles

Superflight nails the wingsuit vibe without pretending to be a sim—it’s arcade fun at heart. So the gameplay is straightforward: you fly a blocky little guy in a wingsuit through procedural generated floating islands, which are based on seeds, so you can save or share your favorites. The real trick is getting as close as possible to the island, its cliffs and tunnels without smashing into them—you glide and manage your speed to weave through rocks, holes, and tight spots, because the closer you fly, the more points you rack up. You can also find and dive through pink portals, to jump to a whole new world.

The controls are keyboard-only, but surprisingly smooth and responsive. No mouse, no gamepad, just arrows and a spacebar (for a quick reset). It may sound limiting, but the thrill comes from those adrenaline spikes: hugging cliffs for multipliers, barreling through gaps, or flying between floating islands. It’s repetitive (lots of crashes are needed to learn), but that’s the hook—mastering “the fall” feels empowering. And what really sells the feeling is the sound design: no soundtrack, just the rush of wind in your ears, making every near-miss feel alive.

Visually, the game is crude and blocky, yet charming. The randomness means most worlds are simple and repetitive, but every now and then, a seed spawns something spectacular—a tunnel maze, a cliff riddled with holes, or islands stacked in dizzying ways. Those moments make you want to jot down the seed and come back later.

This isn’t a game for endless sessions. It shines in quick bursts: 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there, maybe half an hour if you’re chasing scores or got caught in a lucky world. It’s pick-up-and-play simplicity at its best.

Junior’s Take

Junior spotted me playing it and begged to join, so we dove in together. We played in 10-minute turns, him chasing high scores with simple tricks while I aimed for tunnels with perfect runs. He was hooked.

He, indeed, loved the leaderboard chase and quickly picked up more tricks to boost his scores. His favorite part, though, wasn’t just scoring—it was diving between worlds. Junior loved hunting for “cooler” maps via portals or drops, switching worlds mid-dive like a kid flipping channels. When he found one he liked, Junior would start a session of speed dives, giggling at wipeouts but beaming at personal bests… well, until it was time to fall into another world.

Like me, he didn’t stick with it for long stretches. Even after uninstalling, he’d come back a few days later asking to play again. The small install size makes that easy. His only real complaint? Simplicity. Even as a kid, he craves games with a bit more depth. But as a quick thrill, he loved it.

Why It Worked for Us

• Quick-Dive Fun: Short bursts fit Junior’s attention, letting us play on demand and without commitment.

• Immersive Wind Rush: No music needed—the whooshes made us feel the speed, even sparking “whoa!” moments.

• Procedural Worlds: Jumping through portals and discovering new islands kept us curious.

• Adrenaline Bonding: Diving together built excitement, his scores rivaling mine in hilarious races, but with different tactics.

• Budget Gem Value: 3$ rewarded the student devs (1$ for each), teaching Junior about indie passion without big expectations.

Father Thoughts

Superflight isn’t a huge game, and it never tries to be. That’s its strength. For $3, you get a polished little package that delivers exactly what it promises: speed, stunts, and smiles. It’s stellar value for short sessions, without endless grind, just pure flight joys.

For me and Junior, it was a chance to share laughs, gasps, and moments of thrill. Junior’s world-swapping dives mirrored his curious spirit, while my tunnel runs showed patience paying off. We may not revisit it often, but each time we do, it’s a quick blast. And sometimes, that’s all you want from a game—something small, simple, and thrilling. So… if you’re after low-stakes highs, snag it—your kid might just beat your score!
